Like others on here have said, use the paint sparingly because it is all suuuper expensive. The step-by-step dvd and booklet are really good references to use as well. Word of advice: invest in a fairly decent palette to mix colors on. My paintings so far have turned out so-so, but as to be expected with no prior painting background. If you’re on the fence about stepping in to the world of painting, I recommend it! It’s fun and relaxing. You’re doing it for yourself and you can take your time on them too. Additionally, you will want both the #10 knife and the #5 knife (not included here). The paint tubes are a generous size. There probably should have been liquid black and liquid clear (neither included) to accompany the liquid white, and a modestly larger size would have been helpful. Joy of Painting, Season 1, Episode 1, He uses two greens and this set only comes with Sap Green. You will need to purchase Phthalo green. **Q: besides the palet and easel, what else should i prepare to get to be able to follow bob on his shows? ie colors, brushes, anything?** A: Be prepared with more canvases, a bottle of linseed oil for working the paints, and a bucket with thinner for clean-up (I use an odorless turpenoid.) Get more brushes after you have painted a few canvases to know what works best for you. **Q: What type and size of canvas do I need to buy to follow along the instructions?** A: You can use any size you want. I like 16 x 20. Easy to buy in bulk packs at Joann’s or Michael’s. For practice I would go smaller. **Q: Do you cover the canvas with liquid white before painting or white gesso ?** A: The gesso is your primmer, this would always be first and allowed to dry. If you are referring to the paintings that are first painted in gesso, then you paint the painting first with gesso, white, black or gray. After gesso is dry you would then put your liquid base coat over it, in order to achieve the wet on wet technique. DVD is good. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Read this you won't regret *by L***R on July 14, 2016* I had recently taken an interest in watching Bob Ross's old PBS episodes-- and he made it look so easy. I tried acrylic paints from Walmart, different craft stores, but I wasn't getting the same effect that Bob got. I ordered this kit and began painting. First of all, these paints are incredibly dry which is essential in the "Wet on Wet" technique. I would recommend purchasing an additional tube of titanium white as I went through the white pretty quickly. As far as the brushes go, they seem decent. The quality isn't superb, but I would definitely call them decent. I did lose a few brush hairs but that is expectable. If you order this kit I would also recommend purchasing the odorless thinner and the cleaning system. You have to clean your brush a lot in this painting style and the cleaning system makes for a very fast and efficient cleanse. Also, make sure you're using a plastic palette because these paints will soak into wood faster than Bob can paint a mountain.
