So I have had this for exactly 28 months running it on my iMac 24/7 to update a few times a day via Time Machine. Over the course of using it there were periods of time were the iMac couldn't mount it to the computer. No big deal....I would format it and backup the computer as I really had no use for older backups (the most recent backups are what I have this for). Anytime my computer crashed and the hard drive had to be deleted was not an issue because when I tapped into the Time Machine and restored to the latest backup it would be like the crash never happened. Ok so what's with the 3 star? My computer recently crashed and it took down the backup drive with it. There has to be some type of separation between the backup drive and the hard drive. Fortunately I was able to manually get all the data back on my computer through the hard drive so not all was lost however it wouldn't let me restore through Time Machine therefore I had to install all the softwares over again and setup all the preference from scratch. Not the end of the world but a bit inconvenient (not to mention my heart started jumping when Time Machine couldn't initially restore). The other issue is the price. This is double to triple the price of competitors. I didn't mind paying it because Apple Store raved about this brand. But given the fact that it didn't do anything above and beyond the more mainstream backup drives I believe the price doesn't justify the product. Finally after some research it appears that its a good idea to replace these drives every few years anyway. I put in a order for a WD My Passport for $60 and will probably use for two years then replace. The casing on the Lacie is also an advance (just wanted to point that out) compared to the competitors but just get an aftermarket cover for $8 if you take the drive with you everyone.

Did not come formatted correctly to go through the autosetup. Had to re-partition and format hard drive manually. LaCie software available is essentially useless. Probably 20% of the time it will not eject from the computer or takes sometime before it will let me eject it. Haven't had any problems with data being corrupted with it though. I got 2 of these, one is formatted for mac and never have had any problems, the other is FAT32 (the one I have problems with) but neither have lost any data. I use them for picture and video storage and moving from mac to pc and pc to pc.

Great Drive for Time Machine
I've used LaCie Rugged's as my drive of choice for Time Machine backups for a number of years. I've graduated from the 250MB to the 500MB to the 1TB versions as I've upgraded my Macs. You just have to be certain that your computer has the correct ports, or that you order the correct adapter cables prior to setting up the drive. My backup stays behind for the day when I take my laptop to work, and the backups kick in again when I return home -- but the LaCie is rugged enough to travel wherever you go.

Tough, fast, reliable.
I've been backing up my iMac using Time Machine. It works perfectly and it's very fast.I put it in my briefcase and take it home with me every day. It can get bounced around but that hasn't caused any issues. One of my co-workers has been using the same model for well over a year with no issues.Don't forget to reformat the drive using disk utility. I don't know if that's necessary but I always do it.

BEST FOR TRAVELING MUSIC PRODUCERS
The all time classic for music producers. I have been using them for years. A fast way to back up and especially travel. I carry them in my bag and on the plane whenever I travel to produce music. My to go to portable drive for years!

Annoying FireWire cable
The FireWire cable would pop out and disconnect every time I moved! Really annoying . Changed to USB 3.0 after many aggravating times that issue happened . Hard drive is strong , fast , and stable ..

Dependable.
Great product, and tough. I've bought several of these drives. I took my last two to rural shoots in Rwanda Africa and Varanasi India. I put them both to the test of heat, dirt, impact, etc. I'm a huge fan of these and I trust uploading my footage to them. I will continue to buy this product and recommend this drive.PS I don't work for LaCie, haha, I just enjoy good gear.

Works great with minimal setup.
Had this up and running in minutes. The only confusion was that the user guide is on the device, and I didn't know to look for it until I had already made the only non-obvious decision during setup. That decision was about how to partition the drive into "native" and shareable regions. So far, so good. working great as the backup drive for my financial software.

Good quality external disk
It looks 'rugged', I haven't tested it by throwing it around so I'll take the supplier's word for it. I like the double interface, I can use this on my newer Apple Mac with USB 3 and the 'old chap' that has a Firewire interface. I have portioned this drive and am currently using half of the 1 tb as a Time Machine backup and the other half as an archive. It works perfectly and silently taking power from the USB 3 port.

good product bit pricey though.
I have 2 of these and they are used for music library's. i have had one fail but the support was very good and a replacement was with me within a week or so. could maybe do with a thicker rubber coating, but they are small lightweight and work pretty well. i have had trouble with the bundled cable so i would get a premium one especially if it is getting used in an area that has a lot of vibration (i have actually glued one of my cables in).

Prefer this more than the hard-wired thunderbolt-cable version
I'm now using four rugged drives...bought my first a few years ago, it has FireWire 400 + 800, and I have two of this latest model with 2x FireWire 800I also have the thunderbolt version - bought 6 months ago, it's slimmer, but I don't like it's thin hardwired cable...hence why I bought another FireWire 800 model

Received
Honestly, haven't opened it as yet. No need to as my current one is still in use. I use for music production. But I have never had a problem with this brand. Fingers crossed! π

Hard Drive Failed in under 1 month!
In less than a month the hard drive has failed. It was never moved from my desk and was being used to hold large video files for an important project. I should have backed up my files if they were that important I hear you say...but I hadn't as they were so many and they were so large. I had had to move them off my laptop on to this 'rugged' external drive to leave space to work! Now I am stuffed. Lacie will replace it but nothing but a link to Seagates Β£500 data recovery service.
