I was skeptical, but it's legit. - This is seriously a magic book. My nephew is 3, my brother and his sister were pulling their hair out, this kid was so smart that he can tell you he needs to use the toilet to poop, he even knows he'll get lots of sweet rewards when he does, and he could list them all off. He'd still sit on the toilet and at best let out a fart. Then he'd run outside, and poop in his diaper. It as exhausting. Enter Everyone Poops, I bring it over one day and read it to him as a bedtime story, and he loves it, loves making poop noises, loves pointing out the different poops and loves identifying all the animals that are doing the pooping. It's sooo gross, but I keep my composure and join in the 'fun' (I personally get grossed out by toilet humor, so this book was NOT for me) but we had a blast reading it because kids love poop as a topic. Fast forward a week when I'm over again for dinner, he has a big fart and he asks for me to read him this book while he's sitting on the toilet. I do, and we have fun reading and him trying to force a poop out, but we get through the book with no luck. I tell him that he cannot poop in his diaper, and that if he goes outside and poops, I'll be mad, because he promised me we'd read the book when he had to go. But, the next time he feels like he needs to poop, to come and tell me, and we'll read the book and try again. We spent all night worried every time he went outside that he was going to poop his pants, but HE DIDN'T! Instead, one time, he comes running in, runs straight up to me and yells 'I have to poop, can we go read the book!" His parents were shook. He's NEVER done that before... We went up and got about halfway through the book, he got uncomfortable with the kid seat and wanted to sit on the regular potty, which he stretched himself across, when the NEXT magic moment happened, and the one that really matters. HE POOPED! Right in the toilet! It was great. He was SO proud of himself, I was so proud of him, mom and dad were so proud of him. It was an incredible moment. He ran and bragged about it to his sister, he couldn't stop talking about it. I don't know what was going on in his brain, and I did a lot of research that basically lead me to he was afraid/nervous about it, and so was getting in his own head about it. Then there was another thing that talked about how it's just comfortable because it's routine. I think both of these are true, and I think this book breaks through those wirings by making poop something fun for kids AND adults, while normally, adults do NOT like poop. All I can say is this is by far the best money I've spent so far on this kid, it was such an incredible feeling to deliver this gift to my family. I really hope it was only a block for him and now he'll be a 'toilet boy' from now on, but it's definitely too early to know as this only happened today. Either way, it's a massive breakthrough in what has been an impenetrable wall, as this kid would start to throw a tantrum about having to use the toilet, and in literally the same day as that, pooped on the toilet. We started reading it to him a day before starting potty training (we put him in big boy underwear on a Saturday morning) and we read it several times a day during the next two to three weeks. He would request it (together with Julie Markes' "Where's the poop?") almost every time he used the potty, especially when he needed to - you guessed it - poop. I strongly believe that the story line and images helped him understand, verbalize and accept the whole process. What I liked in particular: - Simple graphics with bold colors: just the right amount of image and information on each page. - The story line flows logically and there's plenty of room for you to add your own sounds and gestures: be creative and it will amuse your toddler tremendously. You can use it to build up vocabulary. For instance, on the 'All living things eat...", name all the animals (lion, pig) and the things they eat (meat, acorns) and your child will soon repeat them back to you. Try to imagine together what the child on the same page is eating: is it your toddler's favorite foods or (sigh!) some of the foods you would like your toddler to eat. - My son liked to play a 'look and find' game to identity the poop on every page: for some reason, he found the snake page hilarious as he would trace the trajectory of food from the snake's mouth until it comes out as poop; he got better and better at following the snake's curves with his finger, which is great because soon after I started doing tracing exercises with him to prepare him for writing. - The flap on the last page where mommy says "Excuse me! I am making a poop! Please shut the door!". I used the same words when my son would try to follow me to the restroom and he did get the message after a while. (Faux)CONs: Be ready to read this with your toddler TENS of times. But as long as everything makes its way into the potty and you also have fun in the process, it is SO worth it.
