I have a PS3 and a Sony Bravia Z series TV. For the first several months we had the PS3 connected to the TV with a HDMI cable we got from a friend, and we also had the annoying quirk of frequently losing sound from the PS3. Quite often when the TV or PS3 was turned off and then back on, there would be no sound from the PS3. The only way for us to remedy this was to do a hard reset of the PS3 (while off, hold the power button for a few seconds until it makes a second beep and then let go - in case you are interested), which was just about every time we wanted to use it. This involved going through the HDMI set up menus and losing personalized PS3 preferences. While these new cables are expensive, they are MUCH more reliable than the old ones. We have had a few instances of no sound since the change (but it is much less frequent now) and the issue can now be solved by simply power cycling the TV (which is quicker and leaves the PS3 preferences intact).
