Excellent customer service
I have 2 of these G-Drive Mobile 500 GB portable hard drives. The first, purchased in January, 2011, works just fine. Very quiet and fast. The second one, purchased in August, 2011, started making a whirring and clicking noise and wouldn't mount on my desktop. I tried using the Mac's Disk Utility repair process, Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro to no avail. I contacted customer service today and the person I spoke with walked me through the process of getting an RMA number so I can ship it back for a replacement. He was very pleasant to deal with and assured me that my drive is under warranty so I'll get a replacement. While I'm disappointed that the drive failed, I am very happy with the customer support at Hitachi/G-Tech. I would definitely buy another of their hard drives.

Ports glued in place, overall disappointed
I bought two of these. One had no problems and I loved it. The other had a port that pushed deep into the enclosure when trying to connect a cable. I'm not one to be very patient with weak functionality as a result of flashy aesthetics. The port was glued to the interior of the enclosure to keep it in place, which has a high likelihood of failure, as in my case.I don't buy G-Tech anymore. Overpriced purely for aesthetics. Just buy the bare HGST Deskstar drives - that's the only good thing about G-Tech drives anyway.

Beautiful but Fragile
This is a great looking, fast external hard drive. Great transfer speeds when using firewire 800 connection. I've unfortunately dropped two of these units--one from 3 feet and the other from 2 feet. Both dropped units had their firewire connection fried as a result--plugging the dropped unit into a Macbook Pro causes the computer to shut down. The drives still work with USB, but this connection is substantially slower. So not a robust solution for situations where the drive might get banged around.

The bomb!!
perfect compact drive. light, tiny, fast, quiet, easy set up, backed up 180 gb of data on macbook pro in around 1.5 hrs using the usb2 connection, all whilst using avid media composer and another 2 tb external media drive ..... quite a bit going on simultaneously. comes with fw 400 & 800 options too. bus powered, great price, flawless integration with mac time machine. if you get this drive, definitely definitely buy the case logic 5.5 x 3.7 x 1.2 protective case for 10 bucks.... like it was built to hold this little beauty. i rarely write reviews but i thought this may help to ease the decision making pressure. overall an absolutely brilliant product.

Not Reliable In a Pinch
I bought this drive to replace my Iomega 350gb Firewire 400 drive used to backup my MacBook. The reviews were great, but unfortunately, my experience with the G-Drive has not been positive.I will say that I liked that this drive came with USB, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 adapters and I could use whichever I wanted. I started using the Firewire 400 connector. I soon found that I could not get a reliable connection. When running Time Machine, my Mac took what seemed like a longer time than previously to back up and then the backup would fail unexpectedly. I switched to the USB cable and was able to get it to back up successfully a few times, but it too would sometimes fail. For a drive meant to be my safety in case of hard drive failure (which I have unfortunately had to endure twice in my computer life), I couldn't take a chance on this drive and returned it. My Iomega drive had worked perfectly before with never an error and the only reason I bought a new drive was a need for more storage space. Other users may have had better experiences, but I did not and will be looking for a drive I can trust.

Gets The Job Done
Light Weight, Portable and works well for what I need it for! Not to mention for the money I paid for it, I really can't complain at all.

works but not 100%
The drive has a very large capacity and is compact; it works reasonably well but the indicator light stopped responding after about a few days--which game me a scare--and the firewire connection is a little loose and has come out during use more than once. I considered returning it but its full of sensitive data and I didn't want to go through the hassle or risk not having my data backed up while waiting for a new drive. As I said, it basically works. Delivery via prime was quick, as expected.
