No, the post to hold the candle to the base is not removable.

Q: Are these more of a light gray color or brownish gray?

Actually they are a Smokey medium. Gray color with a distressed finish They were darker then I wanted. I gave them away as a present

Q: Will these actually hold a 3" diameter pillar candle in the candle basin?

Yes a 3' pillar candle fits these candle holders. I bought gold ones and used some Annie Sloan white wax on them to tone the brightness. LOVE LOVE these!

Q: how bug is the base of the candle holder?

Not that big I returned it wrong color
