disturbing would be a better description. It's a serious

*by F***R on Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2018*

I would not describe this as a traditional horror movie, as the unfortunate title might indicate to some people. I don't think it's intended to be "scary" in that sense, disturbing would be a better description. It's a serious, well-done combination of murder mystery and character studies of a psychopath and his victims. It was always interesting and repellant at the same time, as this subject matter usually is. It was also entirely plausible, at least, from what I have read on the subject, it was to me. Anyone who finds it unbelievable I think may not know much about psychopaths. I thought it was very well-acted. Like most Japanese films translated for English subtitles, it does suffer some from oversimplified and poorly translated dialogue, which can make even the best Japanese actors seem silly and bland. There are also cultural differences to consider. The Japanese in general tend to be very reserved. If allowances are made for those two handicaps, I think most will find this to be an excellent film. Would be worth renting, even if it wasn't already available on Prime.

    Nasty Parasite

*by B***Y on Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2020*

Kurosawa unaccountably takes a lot of heat for having the gall to mature; I found this late-career film to be one of his best. The themes and environments are not far removed from last year's celebrated Parasite: secrets intersecting with class issues; crypt-like hiding places; bursts of bizarre and destructive behavior; pawning off the hard stuff to "the help." This is decidedly nastier affair, though, with a latter-half escalation that's graphic and anxiety-provoking (worry for the dog...). Recommended for those who can let go of the idea that Kurosawa is depleted - he's not, he's prescient.

    ultimately disappointing

*by H***D on Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2019*

There are some features that make "Creepy" worth watching. The first hour or so is structured like a Hitchcock film, complete with a detective who leaves the force after a tragic incident and a girl haunted by her mysterious past. The story arc built up some big expectations, which unfortunately weren't satisfied by what followed. The villain was indeed quite creepy. I enjoyed the creative use of light and shadow and the solid musical score, which harkened back to classic film music by composers like Bernard Herrmann. And the innovative use of vacuum sealing was quite disturbing. But the second half of the film was not nearly as interesting. The director threw the detective story overboard in favor of psychodrama. The moral compass of the film began to revolve around free will vs. determinism. I think the audience was supposed to wonder whether the characters' inherent good tendencies would win out over psychopathic efforts at controlling their minds. But I agree with reviewers who found that how this played out in the characters' actions was very confusing at times. In fact we find out what's going on way too late to create effective suspense. And as has been pointed out the story line relies way too heavily on coincidences, and the characters make some unusually dumb decisions even for a horror film. This film was worth a watch, but you may be disappointed in it by the end.
