It had atmosphere, life-like descriptions, a three-dimensional heroine — all of the makings of a great Young Adult novel. My problem with it? It was repetitive, but that’s what happens when you write the YA version of GROUNDHOG DAY. And that’s what this movie is — GROUNDHOG DAY, high school edition. There’s a twist to it though, but I won’t go into it. This is a great adaptation, thought provoking and hauntingly beautiful. It centers on personal growth — and this growth stems from the choices we make. Loved it! The cast is great. It has Logan Miller, who plays the obnoxious Martin in LOVE, SIMON. He is adorable in this movie though. And I recognized Zoey Deutch from Netflix’s SET IT UP. She has one of the prettiest and most natural smiles I’ve seen in recent actresses, right up there with GAME OF THRONE’s Emilia Clarke. Her deep brown eyes reminded me of someone and, sure enough, she is Lea Thompson’s daughter. I see this actress getting lots of screen time in the next few years. As for the setting, I love the grayish, misty cinematography, and the scene where Samantha and Juliet run in the dark woods is my favorite! I recommend this movie a lot. Downsides? We’ll always compare this movie to GROUNDHOG DAY. Nothing we can do about that. GROUNDHOG DAY is a great film, and being compared to it is a big compliment.
