To be honest I haven't had the courage to do this job. The leather hat is brand new and cost me over £90 and I'm a bit frightened of ruining it. I think trying to change red to cream would be a tall order, and it is a dye for leather, not sure how it would cope with vinyl. I use the dye to colour undyed calf leather to match darker brown leather. you can mix the dyes to achieve the correct tone. I also dilute the dye with methylated spirits, and apply with cotton wool, wearing gloves. I have used the leather dye to recolour scuffed shoes too. Obviously, if you were dying a scuff mark, you would not want to get the dye on the surrounding area as it would darken it. You could use masking tape to avoid this and a cotton bud to apply the dye to small areas. Although they still look nice (and are much darker than when I started) I may have to have them professionally dyed to get the result I want.
