It's just too much formula for the water to get in there and mix it up very well, so I always put the desired amount of water in first then add the formula. I guess if you're really worried about being precise you could put in about half the water, mix in the formula, then add the rest of the water and mix it some more. **Q: Can this pitcher be sterilized in boiling water for 10 min? I didn't see that guidance in the instructions and worry about boiling plastic.** A: Yes, when I first bought it we sterilized in a pot of hot water for 5-10 mins. Other than that, we rinse it with the Medela soap and hot water. I wouldn't recommend using the microwave or dishwasher as these things can break down the plastic. Of course, that is being a really anal parent. Every two weeks I sterilize it again within a pot of hot water but I never use the microwave or dishwasher. **Q: what is the capacity of the pitcher?** A: I purchased this pitcher for my daughter so I don't know for sure what the capacity is but I know she mixes formula for an entire 24 hours in it.
