The trick is positioning the float to match the flush characteristics of your toilet. The closer you move the float to the flapper, the longer the duration of flush. Flush the toilet with the flapper in the position that comes from the factory, if it seems to Flush too little , move the float about an inch down and flush again. Keep doing this until when flushed, test-paper in toilet is flushed out cleanly with a little follow-through Rush to final-clear bowl. You do not have to empty whole tank, you just want to achieve a perfect flush. If your ballcock (fill valve) is not right this will affect things too. I detected the all too familiar sound of running water emanating from one of the water closets. Year upon year I struggle with cheap builder grade toilets and their leakiness. The offerings of so called “Big Box Stores” (BBS) are ludicrous in price, and variety, leaving me unsatisfied and more often than not, trying new expressions through combinations of colorful language. Oh yes, I have employed most all the replacement accessories from the likes of the orange, and the blue BBS. Enough I say! I’ve completely had it! I will replace the entire valve assembly with modern technology, namely Toto’s interstellar looking replacement valve to the tune of 35.00 US, or more. While procuring payment I thought, shall I give another flapper a try? Surely a better flapper exists now, better than the Fluidmaster, better than the Korkey, and much better than the overseas outsourced dismal molded rubber rubbish pretending to be a toilet flapper. Better buy ‘em quick boys because I’m going to buy them all! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Finally stopped the leak! *by O***Y on Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2013* This flapper is much more pliable than the 6 year old Fluidmaster flapper that leaked. I slowly poured a cup of white vinegar over the flush valve, filled the tank and let the solution work for a couple of hours. I manually worked the valve to displace any lime/dirt build up and flushed the tank. Before the tank refilled I slipped the old flapper off and slipped on the HydroForce Premium Adjustable Flapper. I had placed the green piece into the hole on the flapper before installing it. I attached the chain to the flush arm and when the tank filled I flushed again. I replaced the tank lid and returned about 20 minutes later to check the level of water in the tank. I saw there was no change in the level of water. The flapper is doing its job and the de-limed flush valve is working as it should. I haven't heard any water leak (glub-glub) or spontaneous flushing to date. As I never put anything in the tank but water I expect this new flapper to last at least through the 5 year warranty period. I recommend it but will keep you posted if it should fail. By the way the toilet was a generic 'trade' model made in 1989. The only feature making it unique and giving it unbeatable advantage is that small float (the green piece on the Amazon's picture). The picture is not what it should be, since it doesn't explain the principle of the flapper operation. In fact, the float is placed on the chain at a certain level, which allows the flapper to adjust the amount of flushed water preventing its waste (adjustment of tank fill alone is not enough, since the tank fill level maintains the water pressure required to flush effectively). Installed with HC660 (a fill valve from the same manufacturer), HFL190 can really save water besides performing its duty as a flapper. After using one set for a couple of months, I equipped all toilets in my home with HC660/HFL190 combination. The price of both (HC660 and HFL190) makes a try painful.You may read comments about incompatibility of HFL190 and certain tank types (I have TOTO already mentioned in the reviews, and had no problems when installing and using HFL190 in it). Most likely, the problems may be caused not by tanks themselves, which compatibility with flappers can be characterized by flush opening sizes and shapes (which are standardized as well as flappers), but rather by how a flapper is affixed to the overflow tube.
