The orange one is the knife you want because that one has the manual positioning (you can lock the blade in place, up to three different positions, including sliding it out of sight). So, order the orange one if you want the ability to lock your blade in place and don't want to hold the button down when cutting a box open. Next: the sharp side of the blade is on the outside of the knife, rather than the inside. So, you're going to be cutting down rather than up. In other words: turn the knife around to use the sharp side. It works fine if you just use the sharp side. The locking blade works well and I've not had any worries about it slipping while cutting stuff up. The only thing it had difficulty cutting through was a double-layer sturdy cardboard box that my 60 lb. office chair was packaged in, and it was mostly because the cardboard was so thick the blade just wasn't long enough. Aside from that, I've completely ditched my utility knife and I feel much safer opening all manners of packaging, whether boxes or those weird plastic clamshell things that destroys every pair of scissors you own. I got the manually locking retracting blade which I think is the right move; I imagine using the auto-retracting blade would be a lot more frustrating to use.
