Anyone know what the hole in lid is actually for?

Do you mean the hole that if you screw off the little top coloured bit there is a cavity with a little white plastic plug in it (like a white plastic drawing pin) that goes through into the main drink area? This is the cavity that helps the mug, on opening it, when it has hot liquid in it from causing an airlock and splashing the liquid out at you. We have four of these mugs now ...two for soup and two for tea as even if you clean them straight away after using with soup they smell a bit. You can buy new plastic/rubber seals costing £1.50 a set - direct from LifeMarque email .... customer.services@lifemarque.co.uk .... we use bicarb to freshen up the soup ones now and again ... but once we had really spicy soup and the smell wouldn't go... they are awesome little mugs but you do need to heat them with hot water first to make sure they keep the liquid stay hot longer.

is it dishwasher safe?

It's not dishwasher safe, and this is stated on the bottom of the mug. Due to its shape, the dishwasher would probably be unable to clean the bottom of the mug anyway. Very easy to wash by hand.
