Unforgettable and moving
Films such as this are the reason that cinema and film making can be so powerful. It has been on my mind since watching it for the first time recently, it is so haunting. It joins the perfect quartet of films by Soviet-era directors and their associated artists and writers (those other films being "Solaris", "Stalker", and "Come and See", although there will be more). Many people may not watch this due to it being filmed in black and white (which looks amazing) and subtitled, or it may simply not be their "type of film", but I am so happy that I am not one of the multiplex crowd. This film will leave an indelible mark on those who appreciate the art and dedication behind it.

Essential Cinema
My second viewing confirmed this as a Masterpiece. Very important film made with strong moral conviction. One of the greatest movies about war.Larisa Shepitko is a serious talent and her presence in the supplementary material is inspiring - intelligent, talented, hard working, beautiful and articulate. This is one of Criterion's great releases - superb Blu-ray image and a wealth of supplementary material. Highest Recommendation. Don't miss this film!
