These are absolute necessities to any small boat!!!
I have had several of these mounted on a few different boats over the years and I consider them a must have on any boat under 20 foot without a power winch.I'm currently building another 16 foot beer-can for salt flats and these were two of my first purchases!A few notes for the nay sayers...I bought BOTH of mine from Amazon as *used returns* for a discounted cost. These were beat up a little during shipment. Owning these before I knew there isn't much that actually goes wrong with them so I had no fear of saving $50.If you have difficulty with locking/unlocking... the 3“ round top cap is a press fit *snap on* type design. They get knocked partially loose in shipment sometimes. Don't fear popping these caps off to realign the twist knob, reseat the unlocking lever into the spring, or disassembling and lubricate the whole drum assembly every year or two.If the crimping on the 3" caps fails over the years you can use a few dabs of polyurethane caulking to hold them down.Attwood use the sell parts for these, I don't know if they still do. (unlocking knobs, pulleys, springs etc) But I've rebuilt a few due to saltwater issues.Over all, these are mechanically super simple, easy to maintain, easy to fix and just simply WORK!!!Some are boaters, some are just boat owners. ;)

Must have
I bought a used 15 wide mod vee jon boat a few years ago and it already had this system installed on it. the winch ended up locking up and was no longer usable but it was very old and poorly maintained. I replaced the winch portion with this new one. I never realized just how much I use an anchor . Pretty much any time you want to hang out in one spot and there is any sort of wind. This system makes anchoring a breeze. the winch is in the back near my seat and the rope is guided along the gunwhales by mounted rollers towards the front of the boat and the keeper is mounted on a piece of starboard (composite board) on the bow. When I want to drop anchor I just reach over and turn the knob, then it's as easy as cranking it back in when I want to move,it has become a necessity. I would highly recommend. It also keeps the anchoring system neat and out of the way. Once you try it you'll know what I'm talking about.

Not impressed.
In my second fishing season now with this winch, and it is failing. When cranking up the anchor, the handle will turn but the spool won't follow along. There's an internal catch not engaging. I can sometimes solve this by turning the release knob, and pulling out 5-10' of rope, then begin cranking. The spool will wind properly initially, but when the weight of the anchor comes into play, the crank won't engage the spool. Tried to contact the manufacturer, was on hold for an eternity, and finally gave up. Unfortunately there's not a lot of hand crank anchor winches out there, so I may try an electric one. I see another review where one can try to take the thing apart and see if there's an obvious solution (busted spring, or whatever). I may see what I can do. But for my 16' Lund Rebel, this winch didn't hold up.

Anchor winch
Seems like it’s gonna do a good job. The rope is thick hard to tie on.

Works good enough.
I found out the others I usually buy aren’t being made anymore and these were all I could find. I wish they were on a swivel to come up once the anchor made it to the socket that it fits in. Used them a few times so far and they work good enough though.
