No, this Ryobi 18 volt electric pole saw runs on battery only. Having said that, I usually put in a 4 Ah battery and after about 30-45 minutes of trimming, I still have about 75% left in the battery. I have cut as many as 10 six inch branches and never used more than half the 4 Ah battery. I have many Ryobi One+ 18 volt tools and batteries, so this Ryobi pole saw was a great addition for my One+ collection. I only use this pole saw maybe once or twice a year for trimming branches, but the convenience of being cordless was my main goal on my 3 acre property. The saw exceeded my expectations, but it has a limited purpose. If you decide to go with an all electric model, you could probably save money. Also, some models have saw heads that can detach and you can use the head like a small chainsaw. If you don't have other chainsaws, a detachable head would be a good feature to have on your pole saw. You cannot take the head off this Ryobi pole saw and use it as a small handheld chainsaw. I have had my Ryobi pole saw for about 5+ years and it has never failed me.

How big a limb -in diameter- can you easily cut? 4 inch?

I have used this for 4 years to cut branches and scads of smaller trees, regularly up to 5" with ease. Also cut a 10" diameter 75' tall tree with it just fine. But I did buy Ryobi's 10" battery powered chainsaw to cut that tree up. Now I've purchased a 16" battery powered chainsaw for cutting trees to clear a 30' wildfire break around the house. Ii continue to use the pole saw for cutting smaller trees, branches, and pruning fruit trees that got out of control.
