Good little book
Wonderful book; covers all sorts of Chinese dialects, including one of my favorites, Hakka...Even goes into non-Chinese languages like Mongolian, I believe...I only wish it had more on each Dialect than just 10 pages or so...as Hakka is so hard to find...but they did a good job with what they did :) ...

Best to hear it 1st
Chinese is a hard language to speak effectively using a book. Best to hear it 1st.

Not so helpful
Not exactly clear (many of the separated chapters there - Dongbeihua, Sichuan, Xi'an, Yunnan, etc are actually very similar to each other that they don't really need separate chapters. Many Chinese linguists don't even consider these as dialects). Better if you just place the actual dialects with a larger scope - Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Hokkien, Xiang, Gan, Hakka + Mongolian, Tibetan, Zhuang, Uygur
