Very nice and Heavy Duty 4" mechanics vise!
Got this on a Amazon deal for $85 shipped. Was looking for something to replace my ancient 4" 30 year old Cummins store brand vise in my Gun room. I knew I wanted a heavy-duty 4" vise so I went with this. It weighs 40lbs right out of the box! Box was a little banged up during shipping but the vise sustained just a few bumps that are very hard to notice. Lead screw is well machined andnearly 5/8" as shown in pics The entire vise came well greased. I will have a YouTube video up shortly for the unboxing and walk-around. Look for it under "Sata 4 inch mechanics vice- English version" There are some great videos on this little vise floating around YouTube. One particularly by the Indonesian channel that is named "G3 Channel" that does a very good torture test on this vise. It was one of the videos that sold me on it. I'm glad I got it after being let down by so many other budget vises lately.

Very well built
Came in a beat up bow, was expected cause the weight. One screw lost. But I easily replaced it. Nearly identical to my 8 inch wilton vise on my welding trailer. Just the construction of it, I'm positive it will do the job.

Very sturdy and huge vise, weighs quite a bit and should last a long time
This review is for the SATA HD Mechanic's Vise w/Swivel Base 8-Inch. This vise is a monster. It weighs in at around 85 lbs so be aware of that it is a big boy. This comes with just the vise and no accessories in there. The jaws have a very nice knurling to them.Build quality. All solid steel here as you would expect. Everything works smoothly and feels well built. The jaws are aligned perfectly and don't get out of alignment during use. The anvil is fairly large and looks flat to me. Can't ask for much more than all that from a vise.Features. The swivel on this is 360 degrees and can keep going around as many times as you want. Below the main jaws there is another set of jaws that is specifically for pipes. I don't see the listing calling this out at all but this is a desired thing for some people out there. With how large this vise is if you don't know where it is going yet you can just place it down on your bench and use it as-is and it won't move for basic work. This thing is just so beefy it stays put unless you really need to wrench on something. Once you are ready to bolt it down make sure the table you are using can handle the vise because it will need to be very stout.Overall this is a good quality vise at a very reasonable price point. It isn't the best made item out there but it isn't the worst either, fairly average. I had not heard of SATA tools before but I will need to keep an eye out for more from them as this was definitely worth my time. If I could ask for anything to be changed it would probably be for it to have a thicker slide but it does work very well as it is and I don't expect any issues from it.

Um, huge.
So I got the 8" version of this vice. Reason being, I currently have the biggest vice Craftsman sells (a 6") which I thought when I got it it would be big enough, but, sadly, there are things that just need wider or deeper jaws.This. This is like what you would expect to see in the machine shop of some huge factory. It is huge, heavy, and sturdy like you wouldn't believe. Not present here as was in my Craftsman vice was the huge amount of play in the jaw mechanism. There's still a bit of play, but it's nowhere as bad as my Craftsman was. This seems made WAY better. If I spin the handle on my Craftsman vice a few times, and grab the jaw and move it by hand, I can slide it back and forth like an INCH. There's that much play in the mechanism. If I grab the jaw on this SATA vice, I get maybe 1/8" of back and forth play. This is a MUCH better vice than I had before, and seems to be made with a degree of precision, even for an 8" vice. The anvil surface is huge, as well. Very useful. It's 85 pounds, give or take. So you're going to need a solid surface to mount it to, and a strong back (or a helper) to lift it into place. If you have need of an "industrial level" vice...this most certainly is one. Big, heavy, solid, precision engineering. Totally recommended.

Operates smoothly; jaws bind tight but aren't difficult to open
SATA HD Mechanic's Vise w/Swivel Base 8-Inch - ST70845SCIf you're reading this review, then you probably already know how much easier (and safer) a good vice makes repairing or fabricating with wood or metal. This vice is a nice size for the corner of my husband's work bench. The handle turns smoothly and can tighten the jaws securely, but they don't bind, i.e. you don't need to hammer on the handle to tighten or loosen it. This is the same with the swivel screws and, if you're putting enough torque on the vice to make it swivel even though their tight, you're using the vice wrong. The base is solid (not hollow casting) and the benchtop will fail before the vice does. One thing to keep in mind about this vice is that it is compact, and the jaws are limited to opening to about 6-inches. The jaws that it comes with are knurled but without any sharp teeth or edges which will work well with most materials; however, they appear to have a standard bolt pattern which means you can replace them as needed. This is our latest of several SATA-brand tools and we continue to be impressed by their affordability and quality. My husband loves this. Highly recommend.
