That rare thing; a five-star cartoon.
I'll admit that in years past I've gotten over-excited about things and bandied about five-star reviews here on Amazon like buns at a birthday. Recently, I've realised that five-star rating should really only be reserved for the best of things, in order to preserve the integrity of the perfect mark. Ladies and gentlefellas, here we have a deserving, classic, timeless and peerless five-star cartoon: the first season of Genndy Tartakovsky's Dexter's Laboratory is finally available on DVD.I say finally, whereas more hardened DexLab fans like myself will long ago have hunted down the Australian releases of these cartoons for home consumption. Problem is with these is they're so hard to find- even Amazon here, which offers DVDs from around the world, doesn't have a page for them, not even one to tell you that yes they exist, and no we don't have them in stock. Like this one, really.Thank heavens for Warner Bros. then, and their Cartoon Network Hall Of Fame series (in fact, make sure and thank them for their sterling releases of classic Looney Tunes and DC Animation releases, too). It's early days yet - the series only debuted in June this year- but hopefully with enough support we can encourage them to release the rest of this classic series, right up to the classic finale "Last But Not Beast", in which Dexter's parents finally found about about his secret life and they all went to Japan to fight a monster alongside the Justice Friends. The two revival seasons that followed (minus Genndy's involvement, not to mention a new actress for Dexter) are to be ignored at all costs. Basically, what I'm saying is, if you've any interest in seeing more of this (and if you're so inclined, Courage The Cowardly Dog and Johnny Bravo as well), don't just add this to your Wish List for possible future purchase: but it now! But some for your friends, too. Hell, if they don't like it, are they really worth the friendship anyway? Who wants to be friends with someone who doesn't like Dexter's Laboratory?Anyway, the show itself. You're presented with the entire first season here, which is thirteen episodes, all of which are broken into two or three smaller segments. Needless to say (I feel), each is excellent, a perfect blend of score, sound effects, sparse but personable animation, character and background design, action and humour. The voice acting is uniformly superb, from Christine 'Chucky in Rugrats' Cavanaugh and Jeff Bennett as Dexter and Dexter's Dad to guest stars Dom DeLuise and Macho Man Randy Savage ("oohh yeeeeeeee-ahhhh!"). Special mention too goes to Eddie Deezen, master of Mandark and the syncopated evil laugh. Ever imitated, never bettered. Don't forget of course that so many of these early episodes feature the antics of Monkey and/or the Justice Friends, prime opportunities both for digs at spy films and comic heroes. While the episodes here are excellent, some of the absolute best ('D & DD', 'Lab Of The Lost' and 'Dexter Detention' to name the obvious) didn't appear until season two, so again, let's get buying at these to do what we can to ensure its release. The DVD comes in a foil-coated AND embossed slipcase, so that unsightly grey you can see on the cover is in fact a rather striking silver, and very pretty indeed. Although there are no extras (I was among the many that was half-heartedly hoping for the foul-mouthed 'Dexter's Rude Removal' to make an appearance), the pilot episodes 'Changes' and 'Big Sister' are contained within the regular episodes, despite rarely being broadcast. The disc features English subtitles, and is presented in the 4:3 aspect ratio. Curiously, unlike the vast majority of Warner Bros. DVDs, this release is locked to Region 1, but you've really no excuse for not having at least one multi-region player these days when they're so cheap. Most people actually have one already without even knowing.I should just say that I'm an animation buff of sorts, and this has been my favourite cartoon pretty much since I first laid brain on it. With respect to the shows that preceded it, nothing before or since has been quite as memorable, and I really hope Warner sees fit to release the rest of the second season episodes so my cartoon collection can truly be called complete.Episodes are as follows.DISC 11 Deedeemensional, Dial M for Monkey: Magmanamus, Maternal Combat2 Dexter Dodgeball, Dial M For Monkey: Rasslor, Dexter's Assistant3 Dexter's Rival, Dial M For Monkey: Simion, Old Man Dexter4 Double Trouble, Dexter's Lab: A Story, Changes5 Jurassic Pooch, Dial M For Monkey: Orgon Grindor, Dimwit Dexter6 Dee Dee's Room, Dial M For Monkey: Huntor, The Big Sister7 Star Spangled Sidekicks, The Justice Friends: TV Superpals, Gameover8 Babysitter Blues, The Justice Friends: Valhallen's Room, Dream MachineDISC 29 Dollhouse Drama, The Justice Friends: Krunk's Date, The Big Cheese10 Way of DeeDee, The Justice Friends: Say Uncle Sam, Tribe Called Girl11 Spacecase, The Justice Friends: Ratman, Dexter's Debt12 The Justice Friends: Bee Where?, Mandarker13 Inflata DeeDee, The Justice Friends: Can't Nap, Monstory
