Very helpful for beginners in Civil 3D
The book starts out by simply explaining in the first and second chapters the overall userinterface, how to set up a new design, and provides a brief overview of all the tools that you willbe using and where the most used will be located. They do a great job of explaining thedifferent types of models you will use the most like Survey, Alignment, and Grading models andalso what to do with them, how to treat each type and how to share these models with otherteammates. The most important chapter to me was Chapter 5 which introduces points and howto import and work with them. This chapter shows the importance of point groups which helpsto organize survey points for quick reference.Since Civil 3D is not my most used program out of the large Autodesk library, I had alwaysstruggled to understand how to work within this program when I was given the chance to usethese files. Figuring out a project's exact geolocation has always been difficult for me due to nothaving a full understanding of how that process works. I was not aware that the Units flyout hada lot more options than plain, simple AutoCAD. This book has helped explain a lot.Chapter 6 was also my favorite as it shows how to generate 3D surfaces which helps me, beingthe 3D geek that I am, understand how the survey plan looks since it can be difficult tounderstand by just viewing the contour lines. Figuring out how to generate these models hasalways been difficult for me. Luckily, the exercises within the book are clear and concise andwalk you through each section step by step helping me generate the model that I required. Now that I have read this book, I have a much stronger understanding of civil 3D and will beready the next time a civil drawing is sent to me. I now have the knowledge and the ability towork in Civil 3d and can now gather the necessary data for any future civil projects which willultimately help build my CAD skills and make me a better overall designer. If I ever need towork on a project which contains survey models, this will be my go-to book.

Detailed, well organized Civil 3D training guide
I really like how this book is laid out. The structure of topics being introduced and blended with the exercises is great for training flow and working through the various tasks. One good thing about this structure is that you don't have to go back through the book to lookup content if you are in the middle of a training exercise since the content and exercises are blended together. I was initially looking for "exercises" in the table of contents and not having those called out threw me off a bit, but after working through a couple of chapters, I really like the way it flows. The whole chapter is an exercise! This book also addresses various "tool belts" for different types of use, like Land Development, Roadway Modeling, Advanced Roadway Modeling ,and Utility Modeling. I think that this is useful in both a professional training environment as well as an individual doing self-paced training.I also like that the more advanced concepts are called out as such and placed at the end of the book.

Good, but not worth the money.
This book is good if you're already familiar with Civil 3D. It's linear, and systematically guides you through a project for which they provide the working files via a website download. I encountered a few minor snags through the first nine chapters but was able to find explanations on YouTube. It became a brick wall in chapter 10 when the steps called out don't give the expected results. Unfortunately, the next steps depend on the previous so you cannot proceed unless/until you're able to fix the problems. At this point, I've had to resort to YouTube enough times to conclude I just don't think this book is worth the money.

Well Laid Out
I really liked how this book takes a new user from the beginning through all the different facets that Civil 3D has to offer. It is constructed in a logical layout. Thumbs up from someone who has looked through several Civil 3D manuals since it first came out!

Wish I had this book 10 years ago!
This is exactly what I needed in 2012 when I was learning and implementing Civil 3D in our firm.It is well organized and very informative in an easy to follow, design-oriented path. This is really great for beginners and people who are trying to understand how to connect the tools of Civil 3D into workflows that combine to design a project from start to finish. It is also really great for more experienced users to learn new nuggets of knowledge and to evaluate the workflows they have established.Great resource!
