Q: Does the gel work better than the liquid for hot spots? The hot spot formula seems to have the same ingredients but comes in a smaller bottle.

I've never tried the liquid or the hot spot formula, but the gel does work on hot spots just fine.

Q: Is this veterciyn formula similar or different than the one for "hot spots"? I'd like to buy more than just 8oz. :\

I have talked with the tech support on the phone and was told that all the formulas are same in terms of active ingredients, they are just labeled differently for different uses. Some people/contexts need specifically labeled products. There are differences in thickness in some of the products. There is the spray which is pure liquid, the hydrogel which is a light gel, the opthalmalgic formula which is extremely thick (and hurts like HECK in the eye, much prefer the hydrogel or liquid for the eye). Those are the ones I know. There is another question here about which formula is best for what, and that is a very valuable discussion, many of the answers contain valuable animal care insights. What I don't know is if the "Hot Spot" formula is the pure liquid or the gel (in terms of getting what they consider to be the best thickness for that use). You could call their Tech Support and ask them-- they were very friendly to me. But yes, the 16oz is the best deal and has the trigger sprayer which is so much easier to operate, especially when your hands are slippery. I also use this product on myself, they make a whole line for human use but it is ALL the same thing.

Q: is this good for cats the have sores from fleas

I use mine on anything that looks or is irritated on my pets. I've even used it on a sore by my dogs eye but applied it with a Q-tip. My daughter had a grass irritation on her leg & I sprayed it on her, it cooled & calmed the rash 
