Do you have to screw this into the wall or does it stand up on its own?

It’s free standing. However if you plan on hanging heavy items you may want to consider mounting it to the wall. It does come with the parts to do so.

Does the bench open far enough to put backpacks into?

The bench seat lid should open sufficiently wide enough for anything that might fit inside. The storage space itself isn't very large. I store winter hats, and gloves in mine.
