Cold War thriller adapted by Frederick Forsyth from his own bestseller. When Soviet spy Valeri Petrofsky (Pierce Brosnan) is charged with bringing about the demise of NATO, he decides his best bet is to detonate an American nuclear bomb at a British air base. The only man who can stand in his way is veteran counter-espionage expert John Preston (Michael Caine), but he must fight the opposition of his bosses before they agree to take the threat seriously.

The original Cold War!
I rather like this espionage thriller. Just why, I cannot decide! It evokes the era in which it is set, very well. And, Michael Caine is always watchable. Pierce Brosnan does a believable turn as a cold-hearted Russian agent-come-sauve Brit, intent on causing carnage, against a backdrop of 'Ban the bomb' and Russian political intrigue.. But, just who can you trust?

A Dvd I will watch time and time again
Review only in relation to the DVD detailed below.The Fourth Protocol ' Special edition 'Studio: ITV DVDASIN: B000NDETQUDVD Release Date: 21 May 2007Aspect ratio 2.35:1If you are reading this then your on the hunt of the best version and you may be puzzled as to how many different versions there is available.Yes I have been there before.Now unless you have been living in a cave I am sure you have already seen this film on TV but the normal TV version uses the Aspect ratio 1.85:1 { pan and scan } but you will be glad to note that at least ' this version ' has the better Aspect ratio of 2.35:1 so you don't miss anything.I don't have a clue how special the other versions are but at least this version is very good value for money.For example Frederick Forsyth also wrote the screenplay and he and Michael Caine formed a Company to actually make the Film which goes to explain how close it is to the Book.I just love this Film and really when you have Michael Caine - Ian Richardson -Pierce Brosnan and Ray McAnally { was the main actor in ' A Very British Coup ' } you really could not go wrong.Frederick Forsyth always goes the extra mile to research his Books and some of his stories have been echoed in Real Life - lets hope Britain never faces the danger that is central to The Fourth Protocol.Part of the joy in buying this dvd is that you have a full length commentary from Frederick Forsyth and lots of other extras.Its a Dvd I will watch time and time again.Locations - Much of the movie was shot in the Bradwell Common district of Milton Keynes, notably the A-frame house from "Homeworld 81". { It is nowhere near RAF Greenham Common cruise missile base. }

Cool War thriller
East West relations apeared to be improving when this film came out, I saw it in the cinema. I am impressed that, although it looks a little dated, it has lost known of its tension and drama. If you're an oldie like me its a great memory-lane movie. If you're younger, but appreciate film, there is much to enjoy. A great cast, story and script in the hands of McKenzie delivers in all areas. There is that 70s-esque descant note in the ending, found in all great movies; things never really change.... Excellent. You Can Take This Job and ...
Before Pierce Brosnan became Bond, he had to prove to the public he can play 'the heavy'. He was too good looking, suave and debonaire in Remington Steele, so the Fourth Protocol showed his nasty side! Play the part, do the work, and have fun. Enjoy ...

Made in 1987, it’s still a taut spy thriller.
This film is classic Michael Caine with an interesting role for Piece Brosnan as a bad guy. Still a verytaut spy thriller, I’m surprised it hasn’t had a higher profile over the years. Movie Buff
