It’s a classic, even if dated at times
I still think this is good for it’s time, and bearing in mind how hard it was for the filmmakers to get the funds for it to make, it’s very impressive to this day at how successful it actually was and I can completely see why. It’s not my favourite horror film, but I completely understand why it’s a classic. Robert Englund was perfect for Freddy, as was Heather Langenkamp as Nancy.

Whatever you do, don't fall asleep!!!
I watched this film in dribs and drabs when it came out, when I was just a preteen kid. The reason for watching it like that was because it scared the crap outta me! I have never forgotten the scenes where Tina dies on the bedroom ceiling and then when she turns up at school in her bodybag being dragged down to the boiler room. The scene with Nancy in the bathtub freaked me out too! However, being a huge Johnny Depp fan, I felt it was about time to brave the old memories to see his first role in a movie. Being 20 years older or being used to horror movies of todays standards has helped. This was still a creepy, scary film but not overly so.I sat and watched it today while my kids and hubby were out, and I was all alone with the dog! I was very creeped out in places but I am proud to say that I watched the film in it's entirity and thoroughly enjoyed it!OK, everybody goes on and on about the rubbish effects and so on, but they all seem to have forgotten that this film was made 20 years ago. It came along with movies like Halloween and in my opinion, this one is much better all around. There is nothing scary about a man in a mask who never speaks and only kills around Halloween time. Freddy is the ultimate horror character. He doesn't care who you are, or what season it is and he WILL get you should you be foolish enough to avoid the caffeine and stay awake tablets!!!The only problem I had with this film is the fact that all the teenagers seem to wander into darkly lit surroundings knowing that something bad is going to happen but going anyway. Then I realised that they only do it while they're dreaming, and nothing is in your control whilst you are asleep!I fully recommend this movie to any true horror fan. Just remember to set aside all the special effects so widely used today, and sit back and enjoy the ride!

Nancy in Terrorland
A Nightmare on Elm Street is a credit to the horror genre; Poe might have envied this macabre masterpiece. Inspired by Cambodian refugees who, fleeing the Khmer Rouge genocide, died while having nightmares (and I thought Cambodians only had nightmares about Gary Glitter) Wes Craven's story is mind-bending. This is the maestro at his best: sinister and vicious, building suspense in between scenes of creative carnage.Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Nick Corri and Johnny Depp play teenage friends who share nightmares about a maniac with knives for fingers. When one of them dies gruesomely, their body slashed apart, police suspect their lover, but Nancy (Langenkamp) wonders if the dream stalker has a real world presence...Robert Englund is a marvellous antagonist; Freddy Kreuger, the dream stalker, is truly menacing here, unlike in later films when he was played for laughs. There's a tantalising mystery about his character, whose back story is revealed only in dialogue. One character describes him as a "filthy child murderer", which is most of the exposition he receives. A lot of slasher films, including later Nightmares, throw in elaborate back stories which say much and little at the same time. Craven doesn't let Kreuger become boring or over-exposed; he exists as a shadowy bogeyman. Langenkamp is also effective as your typical Final Girl. I liked how tough and resourceful she was, setting clever Home Alone-style traps for Kreuger at one point. She doesn't scream unnecessarily or push her boobs together during dramatic moments. Johnny Depp, in what was his debut, is good as her boyfriend. He isn't really challenged here, but his natural presence still accomplishes something. The dream sequences are beautifully creative and show what heights of imagination horror can attain; anyone who's snobby about this genre should watch Nightmare. Nancy's adventures are like Alice in Wonderland gone wrong; strange terrors besiege her as she's chased through the fake reality of her dreams, from bottomless baths to swampy stairs. A Nightmare on Elm Street is pure macabre: weird and intense.

Times change!
Scared me witless when I was a youngster and so I was a little disappointed that it just didn’t seem very scary at all 30-odd years later. That said, given they didn’t have the same level of CGI and effects back then, it’s still a pretty effective horror and, let’s face it, a classic
