Description in error - But there is a Fix !
This book has a serious error in the description - there are NO color illustrations (even though they are described in the book's introduction). I ordered 2 of the books direct shipped to friends, as well as 1 for me, and was horrified to find the error. I contacted the publisher who told me that they "cut" the photos because of poor quality ... when in reality I am sure it was to increaase their profits. A contact with the author yielded all the pictures (and very good pictures at that) posted on a Facebook page. If you own this book or if you buy or plan to buy, go to the following web link to view and/or download all the pictures plus many more of the prep steps -[...] - THIS IS THE SAVING GRACE FOR THIS BOOK !!! I even took all 80 of the digital pictures to my Sam's Club and had them printed wallet size (at a cost slightly more than the cost of the book -- but I was determined !)

What a Delightful Cookbook!
One of my hobbies is learning about the history of cooking and the kitchen, from ancient times to the present. This book gives the reader not only a relevant recipe with present-day measurements, each one is presented in context. Also, this is a highly organized book, and one won't waste a lot of time searching. And, unlike many ebooks today, this one has an imminently useable index. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to making rice pudding with red currant jelly this week!

Interesting read about everyday life in that age.
Interesting to read about the actual protocols. Recipes would be manageable with readily available ingredients.

Inspiring
While I don’t know that I will use this much for cooking the meals are sized for 4 people so nice size for the two of us. The history included with all the recipes is what takes it over the top as a book just to read.

I really like this cookbook
I really like this cookbook. The recipes are fairly easy and I have had no problem finding ingredients (so far anyway). My only complaint is that there aren't any pictures of the finished products. I tend to look at the pictures to decide if I want to make a particular recipe or not.

The Lord of the Abbey
I love this book. It popped up in my email just when I was wishing for a menu of the food they ate in Old England. Oh yea. I am reading the "The Lord of the Abbey". They are always talking about eating, but never mention what they are eating. So to make the book more interesting, I decided to make up my own menu. This was just what I was wishing for. Thank you so much for sharing. Your the best. Oh my goodness, do I ever want to dine at your restaruant? Oh yes I do. I think I will make the trip just to dine on your excellent delights.

Authentic, elegant a British fare
The sections are well laid out and include a good selection of recipes for each. This is more formal styled dining, which definitely fits in with the Downton theme and accurately reflects the lifestyle of a family such as the Crawleys during that period. The recipes aren't difficult to follow and I would think anyone who enjoys cooking. and who doesn't mind putting forth a bit more effort than pushing the auto button on a microwave will have no trouble preparing any of the dishes, all of which are standard, upscale British fare. I don't see the lack of a color photograph for every recipe as problematic either; in fact I think that would take away from the elegant feel of the book.

Some interesting recipes but there are many distracting mistakes that makes reading it annoying.
I thought I was just being fussy, but the repeated mis-use of 'abbey' as mentioned numerous times is just one of many flaws in this cookbook. I have the kindle version with no pictures, the recipes appear to not have been thoroughly tested and the author seems to think that the readers are dolts. With respect to the recipes, the stuffed mushrooms recipe repeatedly mentions fried bread crumbs, when fresh and dried breadcrumbs are both in the ingredients list, but not fried breadcrumbs. The pickled feta recipe does not clarify whether the herbs should be fresh or dry. These are just two of the issues I saw while reading. I have yet to actually try any of the recipes yet and hope that when I do, I'll have better success than the poor reader who thanked her friends with a Downton Abbey dinner. It seems like the author and publisher were just trying to rush and make a quid off the tv show's fame.

Viel Downton-Flair für wenig Geld
Also - über Amazon in GB günstigst gekauft. Klappt super.

Good English cooking book.
I was eager to start using it. I had the opportunity of doing so last week when my church was doing a English tea party for a special even. The recipes are usually simple as most of the English cooking. I may have had some problem with some indications, as for example it took way more time than stipulated for the baking, but people loved the result anyway. So I would encourage people to have it if this kind of cooking is palatable for you.

Elegant Menus for Fine Dining
Well explained and up-dated Edwardian recipes - with a few Irish and Scots added to the mix. Lots of excellent explantions in the margins about why things are done a certain way, or how manners changed aver time.PS: The suggestion is made that its OK nowadays to cut up your steak (or other meat) into bite-sized pieces before eating any is clearly wrong - you would still get raised eyebrows in any fine dining restaurant, even in Vegas.

Like many, I'm hooked on Downton Abbey and was looking for a cookbook for some of the items served on the show. I'd checked through the other available books and read the reviews and this one came out on top. I would have given it five stars, except there aren't any pictures in it of the foods. You can go to Facebook and check out the website for colour photo's of the recipes. All in all, the recipes are laid out well, and contain most ingredients that we have in our pitches already. The shortcake recipe is amazing . . . really a treat with fresh berries and cream.
