Going back for thirds
These locks are great. They provide all the security of other child proofing systems with some advantages. The installation may be a little more difficult then other childproof systems, but with the proper tools I've installed a pack of 8 of these two different times dealing with different cabinet configurations in 20-30 minutes. No childproof system is perfect and you should be aware that your kids are going to get into the drawers or cupboards at some point. With that said, these have kept our son out of the any drawers 99.99% of the time. With that security you also get a fail proof system for keeping the kids out. They have to have a key. There is no figuring these locks out unless they have access to the key. This is a nice advantage over many other systems. You can also leave these locks unlocked. This is great is you have guests, are cooking or doing household chores. Our son has access to the whole house and it's nice when we have guest to simply make sure their door is closed and unlock all the drawers in their room. Same thing for cooking or cleaning the house when he's asleep or not around. With those advantages come two big disadvantages. You have to remember to keep them locked/unlocked depending on the situation and you have to keep the key out of the little one's reach. So far these have been easy, but I can imagine when he's a little older and we have another little one running around we could easily find the key in the kids possession with multiple doors unlocked. As for the install complaints. I thought these were pretty easy to install. You will make this so much easier if you have a drill and a properly sized drill bit. I read a review wishing these were self taping screws. Just get a drill and a drill bit and you're problem are solved. The other issue with install is location and a secure fit. On many of our drawers I've had to stall these either off center of even on the side of the drawer to provide enough clearance. It doesn't really matter where you install them on the drawer or cabinet. Lastly, many times I've need to slightly raise/lower the lock and move in/out the latch slightly to get the right fit. This takes a few seconds of slight loosening the screws, moving the piece and retighting until everything works correctly. Overall I am very happy with these locks and have order them three times to secure everything in the house as the little one has shown us his growth by finding new and interesting places we hadn't considered he could reach previously.

Worth the price
I'm a big fan of this lock system. My main issue is the price, but considering what you get I think it's worth it. At first, I went to a local store and got the usual cabinet locks that you push down after opening the door slightly. I was trying to save money, and these were something like 20 latches for $8. Well, I stopped installing them after the first one because I hated it so much. It's flimsy and I'm sure it'll break, especially because the door can open about 4" before it catches! That surprised me. I figured it would open about 2" at most so I could stick my finger in there and clear the latch, but no, my son could stick his entire arm and shoulder into the cabinet and reach a LOT of stuff. So I bit the bullet and bought my first kit of Safety 1st magnetic locks and I'm glad I did. Every complaint I had about the traditional cabinet latches was eliminated by these locks. I wouldn't say their construction is perfect, but it's just fine for the purpose. I love that the door can't open more than a couple mm, which should help prolong the life of the locks because my toddler isn't enjoying the experience of opening and slamming the door. I also LOVE the ability to disable the locks easily. When we put our son down and I'm planning on doing a lot in the kitchen, I'll unlock the most-used doors and drawers, and I'm not slowed down by having to use a key. It's great! Installing the locks is pretty easy, but you'll need tools like a drill. If your cabinets have a fairly large inset panel, you might have some trouble installing these locks, especially if your cabinet doors also overlap the opening significantly. I only had that problem a couple of times and worked around it by finding a better placement for the locks. After the first few installs, I found I stopped needing the [excellent] templates for the most part, and could figure it out on my own. The drawers were the trickiest and most difficult, but I eventually got those done too. I can't say enough great things about these locks. Because of our floorplan, we have no way to keep our toddler out of the kitchen, and I wouldn't want to anyway. It's nice to not have to worry about him getting into every single cabinet. NOTE: do not buy the single key. It currently goes for $9 which is absurd. If you need an extra key, buy some strong rare earth magnets for your fridge, and glue one to some sort of handle. The keys are nothing more than a magnet encased in plastic.

Awesome product! Highest recommendation!
This locking system is superb. It's the only system that truly stops a child (or animal) from getting into a cabinet unless they have access to the key. Of course, if you leave the key (or a magnet) in a place where they can get it, access is a snap! So, my wife and I installed brand new kitchen cabinets, and we had, at the time (this was about a year ago), an 18 month old. He was starting to get curious about the cabinets as he got more mobile. We wanted to secure the cabinets in a way that would: 1) Not be noticeable from the outside 2) Could not be easily defeated by a child 3) Could be turned on and off as needed Enter this system. I checked a lot of them out, and this got great reviews, though the install was a little more challenging. Ordered a set (and, later, a 2nd set) to outfit the kitchen. I waited until my 18 month old was not around (think my wife took him to the park) and started on a cabinet. Since I care about my brand new cabinets, I was careful. Measure. Measure again, and mark the holes. Solid wood cabinets, so I pre-drilled a hole, and then screwed in the top bracket. Measured and checked the latch system, and then marked, pre-drilled, and screwed in the latch. Make sure you test the system right away to ensure a clean lock/unlock. It's pretty solid. Yes, if you pull really hard it is possible to pull a cabinet open, but it does take some effort. I like the fact that, because the lock is flush (if you install well), when the cabinet is closed and locked, there is no give - that makes a child lose interest in trying to open, because is does not do anything (in contrast to the ones where you open a little, push down, and then fully open). The "key" is just a magnet that you put in the [close] vicinity of the lock on the outside of the cabinet. I believe any decently powerful magnet would work, but these are coated in plastic and won't scratch your nice cabinets. I ordered the 8 lock/1 key system, which only gives you one key, obviously. Recommend getting a 2nd key since, if you lose it, you are stuck for a while. We put a hook high up in one of the upper cabinet doors, and hang the key from there, so we alwyas know where it is (and the little dude can't get it!) I later ordered a 2nd system to complete my kitchen, and had 3 leftover. So I took those and intalled them in on the glass doors in my family room entertainment system, so now my son can't touch the receiver buttons (if he did that, he's make sure we never heard sound again), pop out a DVD, or turn the cable box off. Keeping him out of those doors was a great use for the leftover locks, and I keep the key that came with that set hidded behind a statue in the bookcase above the doors. I love the fact that you can easily lock/unlock the system. We regularly leave one cabinet (the garbage/recycling drawer) unlocked, as we use it a lot, and when not cooking. However, our son goes through periods of curiosity about that spot. So, when he shows interest in doing something he should not in trash can, we just lock it. He quickly loses interest and goes away, and we can unlock for later use. This is a well designed, high quality product. We have been using them for over a year and (knock on wood) not lost a key. We've had no problems with them during this time. If you want a discrete system that enables you to securely lock the cabinets, and you are not prone to losing thngs (like the required key), I highly recommend this. It may cost a little more, but you will be satisfied with what you get.

Great locks with a couple limitations
I installed half a dozen of these in one evening and after several weeks I can honestly say they work great and aren't as hard to install as many would seem to think. First, are they secure? We've found that they are. The only issue is that these locks cannot be installed in most pull out drawers unless there's a substantial upper lip above the drawer where the locking mechanism can be installed. We found that none of our drawers had this so we couldn't use these locks at all. The cabinet doors, however, were fine. I installed these in three different types of cabinets and they all worked fine. However, there was one one annoying issue with the cabinets - doors that were already magnetized by the manufacturer. Two sets of our cabinet doors were like this and I had to get a little creative with the installation. One of these cabinets took a good half hour or more to deal with and was quite stressful. I've read some reviews about the screws used for these and how hard it is to screw them in. Note, these locks require pre-drilling! The people who tried to screw these in without doing that weren't following the manufacturer's instructions. One huge thing to remember with these locks. Do not buy the extra "keys." They're a total ripoff. Simply purchase some strong magnets and keep them nearby. I used magnets from a game called Attraction by R&R Games. You can probably buy some magnets at your local hardware store. Either way, doesn't matter - no reason to buy the extra keys because they charge way too much for them. Overall, these are some really good locks to use with a baby in the house. I find them to be far superior to the typical plastic latch locks that are easily broken by older people in the house (ahem, teens) who don't feel like pushing down the latch to open cabinet doors..

Get the newest model with the diamond-shaped magnet key
I'm a bargain hunter just like you and I went full circle from Amazon to E b a y to other sites looking for the very best deals for some cabinet locks. I actually had a bid on E b a y that I ended up cancelling because after a good bit of research I realized why their item was a few bucks cheaper. Basically, Safety 1st has a really old-style, which is what was being sold by someone on E b a y. You can recognize it because the magnet key is round. The old-style also does not feature the "temporarily unlock sliding-button" like the newest style (the one that uses the diamond-shaped key). What's the big difference you ask? After using the old-style Safety 1st cabinet locks at our brother-in-laws house, the fact that you can't temporarily un-lock the old-style is a big pain, especially while cooking or cleaning up a spill. Now the diamond-shaped key really makes no difference, other than the fact that's my observation in determining if you're buying the old-style or the new-style. I do notice that the diamond-shaped key has a small-hole to hang on a lanyard or keyring of some type, can't remember if the old-style round one did or did not have that. Overall, these work great for our cabinets both downstairs and in the upstairs bath. The sticker-templates are EXCELLENT and makes this really easy to install and ensure everything will line up correctly. Easy 5-star recommendation here. The only gotcha is that the very first one I installed was in the corner, I found you should install these based on the middle of the top of each door. The reason is because our particular cabinets were joined by some type of hidden metal joint in the corners. You can tell because the magnetic key will stick to the corners by itself. Anyways, it's much more difficult to drill through metal, than it is through wood, hence why I decided the top-middle of each door is the ideal mounting location for our particular cabinets.

Great product! Wish I bought them sooner!
I ordered these to keep my 18 month old out of our kitchen cabinets. I installed them and they are working wonderfully! I was concerned about how hard it would be to get the cabinets to unlock since I had read some reviews saying that you had to get the key in exactly the right spot. That is not an issue. They unlock great. I did not follow the installation instructions. I found them confusing and I tried to use their little sticky things for the first one and then just threw them away. Once I started winging it, installation was not bad at all. I used a drill, small philips head screwdriver and a pencil. I was told by people that had these in the past that a regular refrigerator magnet would unlock these so I did not worry about getting an extra key. I accidentally locked the key in a cabinet during installation and found out that you cannot unlock them with a regular magnet. Luckily my husband had a heavy duty magnet in the basement that worked but I would highly recommend getting an extra key or two. From the outside of the cabinet you cannot see the lock at all. It looks so much better than the various latches that hold the door handles together. I could definitely see using these not just for toddlers but also for people with Alzheimer's, dementia, or really anyone one that could be hurt by cleaners, sharp things, etc. These could also be put on bathroom cabinets as a good deterrent for nosy guests. Bottom line is these loo good, are good quality, not hard to install and most importantly, make me feel much safer about my son wandering into the kitchen without me. They have also saved me from having to fuss at him so much for pulling every pot, pan and dish we own out into the middle of the floor while I'm trying to cook dinner. haha I highly recommend these to anyone that needs to keep people out of cabinets.

The best cabinet child proofing.
I just purchased our third set of these. The first two sets we used in the kitchen, the third we purchased for the bathrooms now that we are about to begin potty training. These are the best cabinet child proofing product out there. They are slightly time consuming to install but are worth it. Make sure to read the instructions, if you don't it can be slightly confusing. No marks are made on the outside of the cabinets, and they stay completely closed. A magnet key is used to open them. My daughter does have a alphabet fridge magnet toy, thankfully the magnet letters CANNOT open the cabinets. The decorative magnets I use to hang things on the fridge can open them. I would recommend tying a ribbon to the keys so you can hang them on higher cabinet nobs, and find them easily. These can be left unlocked by flicking the switch on the inside which is great for grandparents. I also leave my bathroom cabinets unlocked most the time and only lock them when my daughter is around for a while. I was also surprised how durable they are, our first two sets were installed in kitchen, we then moved and installed them in our new kitchen. None of them broke being removed, and installed a second time very well.

If you have the money and time, look no further! These rock!
I purchased this to keep my 1 year old out of all our lower cabinets. They have worked flawlessly! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pros - Completely baby proof - Without a key, they can NOT be opened. It also keeps fingers from getting squished. Disable feature - You can disable the locking mechanism. Baby asleep? Need to empty dishwasher? Just disable and open without key. Extremely adjustable - They provide some wiggle room when getting the positions just right to ensure a tight and secure fit. Reusable - Sadly I installed one of them in the wrong location. I was easily able to remove and reuse everything. Even the templates. Secure hold - If you install them properly, they have no wiggle room and can take a 1 1/2 year old yanking on it. Pictured directions - Being able to see the parts and placements REALLY helped. Cons - Pricey - Worth it if you can afford it. Longer initial install time - The first few took a while to figure out. Once I had about 4 or 5 under my belt, I started moving through them pretty fast. Instructions kinda confusing - Instructions were almost too detailed. A bit overwhelming, but I figured it out. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I installed a total of 16 of these things so I feel I have a good grasp on setting them up. Here are some tips: 1) Set aside enough time to do them all at one time. I wouldn't want to do these 2 at a time. You get in a rhythm after a few! Keep going. 2) PLAN WHERE YOU WANT THEM BEFORE YOU START DRILLING! The first set I installed weren't where I wanted them to be. Be sure to put them all in the same spot so you'll remember where they can. You cannot see where they are once you install them and close the cabinet. 3) Have both a power drill with small drill bit and phillips screwdriver. You will need the power drill and drill bit to make the initial install holes. Then you'll use phillips to install the screws. You'll want to hand tighten the screws. 4) Tighten the screws just enough for the pieces to hold their position. Then test it out. You will want to slide each piece into just the right place before really tightening them. If you're patient, you'll get a lock that both falls into place with a normal close AND that doesn't give any slack. 5) Be aware that if you are not careful, the locks will move around as you screw them tight. Hold them steady to keep them in the right place. 6) Buy extra keys if you need too. We have one for each of the 3 rooms we have these locks installed. We purchased 2 8-piece sets and 1 extra key. Totally worth the investment. Keys stick to anything metal... Higher up on a fridge is a really good place for the kitchen one. Just be aware that they are extremely powerful and could scratch a surface if you just slap it up there. I would buy these again and highly suggest them to you if you are in the baby proofing business!

Best child cupboard/drawer locks on the market
Fantastic product which is versatile and effective. Fits sliding draws, all cupboards and comes with an easy to use template which makes fitting easy. I'd recommend this product in a heartbeat.

Great, safe, reliable system.
Hands down the best system for us. We used it on drawers and cabinets which posed a hazard. Easy to install, and easy to use. We also found that we could just leave the magnet (or other magnets which also do the job) in place when we are working in the kitchen, and pull them off to park on the fridge when we finish.
