Oregon Trail II - Anniversary

My older kids played this game for hours at a time, immersing themselves in the simulated trip of the pioneers across the continent. I knew that I would bring it out again for my youngest, and in fact this game is probably the main reason I've kept our 2001 iMac in use, because it requires a computer that can run OS9.Somehow in the intervening years, our original copy of the game got lost, or maybe a neighbor kid liked it so much they took it home. So I decided to buy a replacement.The CD must be in the computer's drive in order to play. For most games, this is really annoying, but this 25th anniversary edition comes in a rather deluxe and attractive wooden box that you won't mind keeping near the computer, even if the computer is in a visible location.The game shows its age in the graphics and sound quality, but the game itself is so solid and intriguing that my youngest is playing it enthusiastically, despite having been exposed to lots of modern flashy games.

Arguably the best of the series, Oregon Trail II is a remarkably entertaining game. This anniversary edition comes with a strategy guide containing the in-game "Trail Guide" and additional information about the development of the game AND the real-life people you may meet along the trail. Great for kids and adults, there's plenty of challenges for everyone. And because no two game experiences are ever alike, you'll find yourself going back for more sooner than you'd think.Note that if you're ordering this for a Mac, just make sure your computer is NOT an Intel based system - the Classic environment (meaning OS 9, which is required to run the game) is NOT supported and you will not be able to play it without doing some disk partitioning and fancy footwork...

This is a fun, fun game. It's pretty simple and there certainly are better graphics out there, however sometimes the simplest computer games are the best ones.You are in control of whoever you throw into your Conestoga wagon along with the supplies you buy! You can go hunting for food or you can trade. There are plenty of random events, namely sicknesses and injuries. Sometimes you find an abandoned wagon and you can get free stuff, there are prairie fires, duststorms, hailstorms, etc!The reason I say that it's better than the 3rd in some ways is there are more stops along the way. I really should get around to trying the fourth and fifth!! This is a really exciting game.
