Tomie dePaola’s beloved and bestselling "grandmother witch" gets some friendly competition in this beloved addition to the series! Strega Nona has cures for warts and headaches, even lovesickness. She uses old-fashioned potions and magic and the villagers in Calabria flock to her door. But when her friend Strega Amelia comes over the mountain for a visit, she brings more than just gossip. Soon she's set up her own shop, using the latest modern gadgets, offering sweets and cappuccino—to all of Strega Nona's regulars! Looks like Strega Nona's met her match, unless she can come up with a cure for Strega Amelia! A Competition Of Two Stregas!
It is nice that Strega Nona gets to face a REAL challenge in this story: COMPETITION! When Strega Amelia arrives to Strega Nona's town, I could see in her sneaky eyes, when she talks to Big Anthony about how many customers Strega Nona has, and plans to beat Strega Nona out of business! But does that stop Strega Nona?! NOT FOR LONG! Once Big Anthony was left alone to operate Strega Amelia's modern magical machines, and gets the headache and warts cream mixed up, Strega Amelia was beaten, and Strega Nona was back in business! Strega Nona wins The Competition of Two Stregas!

Cute childrens books written about an Italian Nonna.
My daughter bought me one of his books cause I am Nonna to her kids.I bought the rest of them so I can read them to my grandchildren.I'm part Italian and my family came from the same area as the story. It just has a sentimental value.

... Stega Nona book series and this one was another perfect one to add to our collection
Our family just loves the Stega Nona book series and this one was another perfect one to add to our collection. Strega Nona has an old friend come to visit. Her friend decides that she wants to take set up her shop there in Strega Nona's town. I could not believe that her friend did that, however, after putting Strega Nona out of business her friend makes the mistake of hiring Big Anthony. Which if you have read the Strega Nona books before, you will know that Big Anthony messes up everything he touches. Karma comes and gives Strega back all her business and her friend leaves town. Good for Strega Nona, proving sometimes Karma is a business killer. HAHA! My kids really enjoyed this book, and the lesson was great. Friends should not try to take other friends customers.

Another fine book in the series
I believe this is the fifth in dePaola's Strega Nona series, and this time the clueless Big Anthony, looking more than ever like a scarecrow or one of the Flowerpot Men, is seduced away by Strega Nona's back-stabbing crony, Strega Amelia, but Strega Nona wins out in the end thanks to Anthony's incompetence. This is again beautifully illustrated, mostly done in reds, turquoise and mauves, set in an arcaded southern Italian town, and the story hints at bitchiness and cunning under a surface of niceness. A bit like real life, maybe....... A funny and truthful story.
