KK0307 64OZ Refractory Cement

I bought this to protect my fireplace--specifically, I have a very standard brick fireplace in my living room that had some cracking mortar and didn't seem to be made of particularly durable brick (it really seems to be plain-Jane brick). So, my home inspector recommended I put on a parge coat of fireclay. That was pretty hard to find and after some research, it seemed what I really wanted was refractory cement. I followed standard procedures for application--I brushed and wiped down the brick and the sprayed and wiped with a water-soaked sponge (apparently, the moisture opens up the brick and allows it to "take" the cement better). I really needed three buckets of this stuff to a parge coat of the entire combustion chamber as far as one can see (so not up to the damper)--it's a lot of expense for a small volume of cement. However, the cement does look good wet and dry in its buff color and applies well. It's very workable for up to 30 minutes or so, making it easy to get off your trowels and other tools.Despite my care in application to keep between minimum and maximum recommended depth and to apply to clean, moist, brick, this stuff is bubbling all over the place from heat. It hasn't flaked yet, but it appears that it will in short order. I think if I have to do this in another couple of years, I'll try a different brand.
