Awkward Family Photos

This was surprisingly wholesome and funny
When I was in high school and college, these sorts of "found and submitted" photo dumping sites were very popular, and a lot of them eventually landed book deals. Some of the most famous were hosted on icanhascheezburger, but there were others, like People of Wal-Mart Awkward Family Photos.A lot of these memes don't hold up very well. I feel like people were getting away with making off-color jokes well into the aughts, shaming people in ways that were classist, racist, fat-phobic, or misogynistic. But Cake Wreck and Awkward Family Photos both stand the test of time pretty well, because (1) the content they're hosting for the most part is inherently wholesome (people who care about family photos usually do so because they love their families) and (2) the hosters let the images speak for themselves and even invite posters to share the stories behind the photos, which I really enjoyed. The best thing about AWKWARD FAMILY PHOTOS the book is that a lot of the pictures are cute and just kind of funny but in a way that doesn't really make the people the butt of the joke. Like, there's a picture of a Star Wars-themed wedding that I adored. And there's an Xmas pic where a family is dressed up in their pajamas and everyone matches except the dad, who's wearing boxers. And there's another pic of a family at the lake where the dad (AGAIN, the dad) is wearing a zentai suit for some reason. My favorite pics were probably the ones of kids misbehaving in a funny way (torturing their dolls, or holding up an Etch-a-Sketch that says I HATE THIS during a family gathering while grandma looks on in disapproval), the funny pet photos, or the ones that have kids who are obviously in some sort of rebellion phase dressed up like goths, emos, and punks. YAAASSS. Especially if it looks like they're kind of secretly having a good time and are just living their best goth/emo/punk lives. This is the perfect pick-me-up for whenever you need something light to cleanse the literary palette.4 to 4.5 out of 5 stars

(Ab) Normal Family Photos
My husband has recently found a box of very old family photos. His family is solid Norwegian/German stock and mostly settled in northern Wisconsin. He and my two sons (whom I just love to see) have spent their last several visits in our basement looking at those photos of my husband's grandparents and great-grandparents, trying to guess who they are and admiring the strength of the women particularly. The women are especially noted for their strong ankles, long skirts, broad-brimmed hats, and determined facial expressions.Anyway, I was just delighted to see the book "Awkward Family Photos" and have bought a copy for each of my two sons and my husband. It is just hilarious - not because of the people photographed particularly, but because of the settings! It might inspire them to bring the box of our family photos upstairs and arrange them in some order in a picture album, so at least we can all be together, rather than separated when the "kids" come to visit!

The Movie was Better
Actually, there isn't a movie of Awkward Family Photos. There is an Instagram site where many of these fabulous photos are posted. Yes, the book is funny because of the pictures, but the text that accompanies it is not very witty. I laugh my head off when I view the Instagram site. What I would recommend to the authors is that they stick with short captions under the photos and then PLEASE include the comments that are posted online which are Hi-Larious!!!! This book is good but it could be SO much more.

Great gift for the family photographer
Got this for my future father in law, the documentarian of the family, for father's day. He found a great deal of inspiration in it and now we eagerly await their next Christmas card.It ought to keep things interesting.

...An Awkward Review
...I was told about the site, so I went to it to check it out, as my parent's owned a portrait-studio......It was hilarious!...Wanted my Dad to see it, but he is an old-fart who does not have a computer, so I bought the book as a Christmas gift for him, and he laughed his butt off over it!...The book is nicely presented, and at a very reasonable price for the wealth of laughter it will provide. There will be many times while looking thru the photos in this book where you will just have to stop and wonder what the heck the folks in these photos were thinking...or in some cases, what the photographers were thinking as well?.....It will most likely make you feel better about yourself and your own photos......It would be an excellent addition to anyone's library!

Hilarious.
This book is hilarious. The photos are super funny. It's even better because all the photos are real and aren't staged. I appreciate the families sharing their awkward photos for my entertainment!

FUN
Haha...! Too much fun! I purchased for my eldest son as a housewarming gift for his first apartment.. He wasnβt really sure what to make of it at first, mom being weird I suppose.. His girlfriend cracked right up.. I have a feeling itβs going to be a great conversation piece for years to come.

This book is good fun, in a 'how not to do it' ...
This book is good fun, in a 'how not to do it' kind of way. Some of the photos are like those taken years ago when relatives came to visit. Some of the awkwardness has to do with fashions of the day. Id recommend the book, in that it will teach you some things not to do.

hilarious
A really good gift for people with a sense of humour. A good coffee table book. What pictures not to do with your camera.

Seemed like a good idea at the time...
Didn't really think this was as good as I'd hoped - an 'extra' christmas present that wasn't as funny as it was made out to be.
