Great read on how big oil has worked in the past and what one might expect in the future.
The authors clearly understand how EXXON worked from the 1970's to present day. This period of time has included many challenging issues that needed to be worked through. Although the book was paid for by EXXON the authors made it clear ( in their contract) that no (or very little) conflict of interest exists in the writing. The book contains many specific examples of how EXXON reacted to political unrest, environmental unrest and other opportunities to maintain the edge. At several points in this period of time, it was not clear they would, but clearly the company has been run by top leaders. Great book, and not just a review of their paper trail.

My liberal friends laughed mockingly when I told them I was reading this book. My son is a young upstart Chemical Engineer at an XOM plants, and he has spoken very favorably of the company and, often, about the absolute fanatical commitment it has to OIMS--"Operational Integrity Management System"--mandated after the 1989 Exxon Valdez and two other tragic accidents. It was extremely valuable to read this book in light of two years of my son's observations about the company--Pratt has done an amazing job capturing the corporate culture of XOM from the historical perspective of how the company has responded to the major changes in the world over which it's business plans have no control. This book is even handed, if not at times a bit obsequious in its portrayal of senior management. It is highly readable for the average intelligent reader who is not otherwise familiar with engineering or the oil industry. It is extremely well organized and written, and quite enjoyable. He ends every chapter and the Epilogue with an excellent, concise summary of the preceding material, which makes it very easy to recall what you've just read.I agree with another of the reviews who noted that this book is a must-read for all ExxonMobil employees, especially those who have aspirations for advancement in this oft and unfairly maligned outstanding American corporation. I can't wait for the next volume from Pratt--hope I don't have to wait long!
