American Sailing Ships: Their Plans and History (Dover Maritime)

Informational, historical, but old images.
Bought for a friend and he likes it. It has some of the detail he is looking for to help him with his model building. It is like the bible. Old, maybe outdated but basically good.

American sailing ships deals with interesting information of native American sailing ship development.
Charles G. Davis has written quite a few good books on ships and ship modeling. This book brings discovery of the many types of sailing ships of American history that I was unaware ever existed. The various American sailing ships Mr. Davis focuses upon gives us not only ship designs, but history behind those many designs, development of them in America, and how each design performed its mission.

Good context for those who like Historical linkage
Interesting illustrations and plan view's of some of smaller working[sail] coastal cargo and fishing craft that were as common place a Hundred years ago as cruise liners and supertankers are to us today. First Published in 1929,the text makes for informative reading as the Author is relating to vessels that many people alive in his day had either had family who had immigrated to U.S. on or had themselves as children.Or worked as crew on same ships.Good context for those who like Historical linkage.

Not bad for something reprinted from a 1929 book. . .
Even though it was not what I expected, this was a good book for anyone interested in sailing vessels. This book is a reprint of a book first published in 1929 so it does tend to look outdated with the photos and graphics looking a little blurry and out of focus. But you can tell from the author that this person was written by someone who really loved sailing ships. The written details are full of enthusiasm and knowledge. Despite the limitations of the drawings, this is still a good book for those, like myself, who enjoy reading about old sailing vessels!

American Sailing Ships: Their Plans and History (Dover Maritime)
Charles G Davis requires no introduction from me. He is arguably the doyen of model ship modelling. Whist his methods reflect the age wherein he writes (1929), the basic lessons are invaluable and anyone interested in the hobby should have this volume on their shelves. There is little else to say of this primer, the contents of which may come as a shock to those who only know of plastic kits; this book harks back to the days when one began with a block of wood! Although the title makes clear the content, the information therein is, with a bit of intelligent interpretation, applicable to ship modellers generally. Essential reading!
