Up Our Sleeve: Official Bootleg Vol 3

No Gems This Time
When I learned of Vol. 3, I was excited about more shows from the band's peak years (putting aside the whole Frampton vs. Clempson debate), yet concerned that they would pale compared to the stellar Winterland KBFH release. My fears were justified. All four shows are audience recordings. Sadly, none of the tapers were right in front of the stage. Thus, we don't have great sound quality anywhere. The relative strengths and weaknesses follow:New York - the worst of the bunch. The taper is pretty far from the stage; the soundfield is narrow; the treble at times is too shrill and/or distorted; and instrument separation isn't very good. It is listenable and Clempson has a neat Hendrix-like wah solo but I can't say I'd relisten to the show. Overall, a C+.Tulsa - better. Although the soundfield remains narrow, the taper is a bit closer and the treble is ok. There is a moderate amount of tape hiss and the audience clapping can, in spots, be quite loud, drowning out the band. There's also some nearby people talking now and then, though not too annoyingly. Performance-wise, this show was the weakest. By no means was the band bad; rather they were just less dynamic than in the other three. Overall, a B-Boston - better yet. Though Up Our Sleeves leads things off with Clempson's leads being almost inaudible, the instrument balance improves after that, and, although somewhat variable, is generally ok thereafter. The taper is fairly close to the stage and there,'s no audible hiss. The clarity is quite good., esp. with vocals. But, at times, the clapping is loud and this audience does a lot of clapping! An excellent show performance-wise by the band. It's a B+ when the balance is good and a B- when it isn't (I assume the taper changed positions occasionally, wandering to the side away from Clempson). Too bad he didn't center and move closer - this could have been a really strong recording.Philly - The recording isn't as clear as Boston - the taper seems further from stage, so the sound has a general muddiness to it. But, the balance is better and there's less clapping,/ambient noise. Tape hiss is minor, not distracting. Another really strong show. I'd give it a B.So, although there's nothing to compare with Charlton from Vol. 1 or Philly from Vol. II, some people might enjoy this, despite the similar set, yet significant sonic downgrade, to/from the KBFH release.

ANOTHER DECENT ASSORTMENT OF SHOWS FROM HUMBLE PIES HEY DAY!!!!
this is another really great BOOTLEG box set that comes in a clam shell box that contains a really decent assortment of pie shows and a bit of some sound check tracks on disc one that the great jerry shirley seems to be putting out the past couple of years wich i think is great!!!!! please keep in mind not all of these gigs sound like rockin the fillmore east that is why i stress the word BOOTLEG box of assorted shows. i actually enjoy sets like this by all my favorite artists from the 60s, 70s & 80s as bootlegs offer what really went down way back in the day and mistakes, warts audience and all are here, no record comapny cleaning up, no over dubs and no fake crowd noises wich did indeed take place on many classic live albums from the 70s & 80s, anyway we start with a decent sounding show on disc one that features the sound check for the first two tracks then the remaining 5 tracks sound very good and the band where really on fire and i do remember reading about this show in jerrys book as gaelic park up in riverdale n.y is about 40 minutes from where i live. the second disc finishes out the show as well, great versions of honky tonk woman, doctor up our sleeves & hot & nasty on this disc, nobody who likes real live shows should have a problem with this set, then on disc three we get one of the very next shows a few days later from tulsa ok wich sounds fantastic!!!!!! god !! pie where such a great live band way back in these days i wish i could have been there to see these gigs instead of being in pre school but that is another story, disc four is from the next tour in april 1973 in boston MA and this disc is loaded with all pie fan favorites and though there are a few sound problems this disc & show deliver the goods well enough for my ears as i am just happy to hear these shows from nearly 50 years back. the band really nailed it in boston & then we come to the final disc five wich is from the old spectrum in philadelphia PA and this was another awesome show, the sound on this disc is great and i also read about about this particular show in jerrys book as well and if my memory is right the opening band for this gig was JOHN ENTWISTLES OX wich was another killer live band from the early to mid 70s john used to bring out on the road when THE WHO where not touring or townshend was writing so i find it interesting john did some of these opening slots as i also have boots of THE WHO headlining and selling out the same venue. oh well this was the early 70s and rock n roll in general was so much better back in these days, i feel any humble pie fan will really enjoy this five disc set down memory lane and i hope you enjoy this ( if you buy it) as much as i have spinning this all week. great stuff jerry i look foward to a fourth set of gigs next year.... you are making steve very PROUD!

I expected very little...and was still greatly disappointed
What a miserable sounding box set. I own the first Official Bootleg and knew that these are surreptitious coatpocket Walkmen recordings, but was not prepared for the completely hollow, inaudible and incomplete recording quality. Some songs are literally cut off before they are done. Beware. This really sucks.

Poor audio quality 😢
Not worth the price. Unfortunately this was the second live concert set of one of my favorite bands but the sound quality is so poor that even loyal life long fans will be disappointed 😞

Typical early bootleg quality but every disc a gem
Brought back all the memories of being there at rock - blues concerts in the early 70 s. Raw but atmospheric typical bootleg of the time, low quality recording but powerful memories
