Surprisingly awesome
Elixir has been on my TBR list since it came out…five years ago (late much, Tarynn? I know, I know). The thing is, I’m a fan of Hilary Duff’s music and movies, and I was terrified of not liking this book. Thankfully, that was not the case at all. I should’ve read this sooner because it was amazing!I enjoyed this right from page 1. It usually takes me a while to get into a book, so it’s always awesome when I can get swept away so fast. The mystery of it starts pretty quickly and the intrigue never let up. There were times when I was honestly scared because of the weirdness happening. Only a few books have literally made me jump in my seat and this is one of them.I loved every single one of the characters. Clea was down-to-earth and intelligent. She seemed like a real person to me, not just a caricature of ‘heroine.’ She was definitely someone I’d want to be friends with. Rayna was a perfect best friend for her. Also smart, but more of a dreamer, which I think Clea needed in her life. They complimented each other well and I really liked their banter. Now the guys. Ben was interesting. At first I didn’t really understand his purpose. What did her parents say they hired him for? It didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me until the real reason was revealed. He was still cool though and with his obsession with mythology, I could see myself having some fun conversations with him. Sage is the character I’m left with the most questions about. He seems awesome and I liked his relationship with Clea, but I don’t feel like I know much about him as an individual. What are his interests besides being with Clea and painting Clea? I hope we get to find out more about him in the next books.Piri was a fun side character. She brought a lot of laughs with her unusual superstitions. I’m curious if any are going to be worked into the story and made real. This book was fantastic and completely addicting. I highly recommend it if you haven’t already read it and can’t wait to start the next! 5/5

Baroness' Book Trove Review of Elixir
Wow all I have to say is that this book is awesome and a great read. I have to admit Hilary Duff is a pretty good writer. I felt like I was actually a part of Clea’s life throughout this whole book. The story that Hilary crafted with the help of Elise Allen is mesmerizing.Clea is a talented photojournalist. I felt sad for Clea whenever she talked about her dad. You can so see that Clea wants to be close to her mom but that she was closer to being a dad’s girl. This is especially noticeable in the way that she looks for what truly happened to her dad. She doesn't really have that super close connection to either of her parents with them being gone most of the time. She is close to Rayna, her best friend, because they are both born on the same day and they live together on the same property that her parents own. The two are so close that they can tell when the other is lying to the other or when the other is upset. Rayna is the one that pushed her to follow her feelings between Ben, a guy that is a friend/bodyguard-type of person that her parents hired for her photojournalist trips, and the one that has been showing up in Clea's pictures. Clea is a pretty stubborn person when it comes to certain parts of her life such as her photojournalist assignments, to getting her pictures taken, to her love life, and of course about her dad.I am glad that I read this book finally (as it has been on my to read shelf for a while), to me it is worth ten butterflies as a rating, if I had a rating like that, but five butterflies rating works. If anyone asked me about this book for a recommendation I would tell them that the book was awesome and that they should give the book a try.Anyways until next time enjoy this book review brought to you byBaroness’ Book Trove. To read my other book reviews please go to my blog site: baronessbooktrove.com

Easy read, but flaws in development
Hilary Duff has a pretty cool resume and has done some neat stuff by the time she was 28. Now she's added 'author' to that, and since I have considered myself a fan (loved Lizzy McGuire), I wanted to really like her writing, especially as it's tough to find some good paranormal reading that isn't all oooo sparkly vampires or whatever. So I read 'Elixir' and then I read its sequel, ' Devoted: An Elixir Novel ', and admittedly, read them pretty quickly, because the writing style is easy. But - warning, SPOILERS! -I struggled from the outset, because the lead character is supposed to be 17, and not only that, she's the famous daughter of a Senator and one of the world's finest surgeons. She's also doing homeschooling her senior year while pursuing a career as a highly sought-after photojournalist. Did I mention she's just 17? (I had flashbacks to when I would write things in high school, and the lead character always seemed to be well-off and fairly independent for a high schooler. Oops.)Some of Duff's own experiences come through - as a celebrity, she no doubt had access to nightclubs even when underage; and her character says at one point that she basically needs permission forms for the government, signed by her mother stating she can leave the country on her own. She gets such a form for one trip, but after returning home, immediately jets off to another foreign country but doesn't apparently need same form for that trip? It's these little details that often reminded me this was pure fantasy fiction. (Making the lead character at least 18 would've solved some issues but I guess the point was to occasionally interact with the mom.) Additionally, I always think it's weird when characters are pretty much instantly in love when nothing between them would really suggest "Hey, they should fall for each other". Call me an old romantic, but there it is.It's hard to buy into everything about the characters, but overall, I liked the writing - so I kept reading, at least through the first sequel. I think I'll look forward to more of her writing, perhaps once she begins writing about characters in their 20s.
