Best way to get started on Elastic search
At work we are planning to use elastic search for some of our use cases. Having no background on search I turned onto this book. What I’ve liked about this book is that it sets you up nicely. Starts easy with plenty of examples/code snippets while also covering the underlying concepts and pitfalls without overwhelming the reader. The only disappointing piece for me was that this book didn’t covered some key features getting deprecated in 6.0 release. And that has a major impact on the way you design your indexes. One such feature is mapping type, thankfully one of coworker read it somewhere and after doing some research it was confirmed and we had to rework on our design. My recommendation will be to wait until they have new edition that covers 6.0 release before buying.Overall a good reference book to have for elastic search.

The Elastic Stack Bible
This book is great! Some of the examples might be out-of-date, but a quick search can find SO answers on syntax changes. Buy this book for the commentary. The authors do a wonderful job of adding color to many of Elastic's features and design choices. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the Elastic stack, even today. It's thick due to JSON in the examples taking up space, but it is a relatively fast read.

Great book, but its out of date at this point. Autocomplete is one of the most interesting applications of ElasticSearch and it outlines an out of date method of implementation using edge n-grams rather than the suggestion API. ElasticSearch 5.0 is also out with some nice new features and greatly improved performance, so I might advise people to wait on a new edition.

Good book but don't waste your money
When I purchased this book I was hopeful to learn more about Elasticsearch. With a name like "The Definitive Guide" you'd figure it would be, well, definitive. Disappointment came when attempting to work through the examples. The book uses version 1.4. We're at 7.8 (as of July 24, 2020). The books says to check out the online version. Ok. i did that just now. Under _Legacy_ Documentation you'll find a link to the online version of this book. Luckily that is the end point. I haven't checked but the Readme.md says that the master version of the book is for the master version of Elasticsearch.

An accessible, yet expert guide to Elasticsearch
This book begins assuming all you know about Elasticsearch is the name, but the final chapters include deep wisdom about creating and tuning multi-node clusters. There are a lot of technical books that are long on fluff and examples, but short on the gritty details an architect needs to know, but that is not a problem with this book.Strong recommend on this, absolutely delighted it's on my book shelf.

This is a fine book. It saved my bacon
This is a fine book. It saved my bacon.I'm a database developer, expert in Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL. But I knew nothing of Elasticsearch. When my boss wanted a product catalog database moved from MySQL to Elasticsearch I needed help. This book was just the ticket.

It's an awesome book, I was really desperate to learn elastic search and this book really does the trick. 80% of it still applies with ES 5.x

Authoratative Elasticsearch Book.
There is plenty of relevant Elasticsearch information provided in this book. There are sections that explain in greater depth the behind-the-scenes activities. The reader is made aware of which material is primary knowledge and which parts are supplemental.

It's a great book (and product) but beware that some content is out of date - this is an evolving product.
This book is well written and easy to follow. If you're fairly techy and I would assume you are if you're looking into elastic search then you'll have no problems and you'll like the detail this book going into explaining the what, how and why of elastic search - if it's totally baffling to you now, it'll be very clear after you've read the first 100 pages. However you should be aware that this book is the first edition and they're actively working on the second edition so some of the content is out of date (as is some of the content on elastic search's website - their initial getting started video is out of date and will be confusing if you try to follow along). You can read this book online (the whole thing) here: https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/guide/current/index.html which is a work in progress also. It has some updated content, so the online content is different to the paper book, but it is equally out of date/has some errors (sometimes the examples in the book don't work) and the whole book is constantly being updated on github https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch-definitive-guide. I guess it's just a result of elastic search being an early stage (relatively) product which is still evolving.Don't let that put you off elastic search, you'll quickly realise this is the solution you are looking for and be questioning why you can't just ditch SQL altogether (I still don't know if I can, but if I can, I'll certainly be working towards that). It's a little rough getting going because they've not long released elastic search 2.? and so the getting started guides on the website and the initial chapters of this book are contradicting, confusing and sometimes just wrong.Personally I like having paper books as a reference and so I'm happy I have this and I'm sure I'll be flicking through it throughout the integration of elastic search into my project. Most of the content is still exactly the same as the online book (the first few chapters have the biggest differences). If you're a total noob and want to get started, I'd recommend watching the getting started video,https://www.elastic.co/webinars/get-started-with-elasticsearch/?baymax=rtp&elektra=videos&storm=video1&iesrc=ctr(just watch, don't try and play along as it's all out of date and so the references to installing kibana/marvel don't work - on Windows 10 anyway). And then start the first few chapters on the online version. If you get the book too, you'll soon see that they become in sync after the first couple of chapters. So if you like books, buy this book - it's still good. I'd still recommend following along with the online book as you can copy and paste the code examples as you read (as of 2015-12-21 the 'View in Sense' links aren't working | there's a Github issue raised). But if you find a problem and your experience isn't what you expected from what the book told you, you're probably right. Check the Gibhub project on the book and search the issues/open one of your own.1 star off because all that is mildly annoying at first, but otherwise I'm standing and clapping elastic search... hats off.TLDR; The book and elastic search are excellent and you should definitely learn elastic search and buy this book if you like books. But you'll be frustrated that things are a little out of date/evolving and you'll need to keep your eye on the Github projects.

Must read for any serious engineer working with ES
Although outdated, still a very relevant resource. The book is easily readable with lots of examples, helping you get from zero to production in a couple of days.

Great but needs updating
It’s a great book, but don’t buy it until the 2nd edition comes out. Elastic has changed considerably since 2014/15 when the book was written.
