GDFB AB0129 Shield Boss with Hemispherical Dome, 7.5", Multi

Great quality shield boss. Heavy gauge steel gives this boss a solid and functional feel for those looking to craft a defensive tool fit for thwarting arrows and glancing blows. I used it to build a shield to commemorate a recent trip to Iceland. Attached to a 1" thick shield base using pan head Torx deck screws - may have lost some authenticity, but the look was close enough for my use-case. Sanded and painted the boss with a hammered finish spray paint to give it a more rustic look. Form and fit were better than I was hoping for. If I am ever in the market again, I'll look here first.

Great construction! Was JUST the thing needed to complete my home build. Decided to build a 36” scale model of a Viking shield to honor my Swedish Mum and our ancestry. Being that it’s just wall decor a boss is not actually needed. Without it, the shield looked great, but something was missing. This boss was EXACTLY what it needed for that finishing touch! I added some dents (used my splitting mull) which was not as easy as you might think. Then added a custom mixed color wash. It’s now perfect! On a side note, my mum was named after the Norse god Tyr; which is pronounced T-Ear. The feminine is Tyra; pronounced T-Ear-Ah, not Tie-Rah. Her name has been used every generation in her family since the Viking Age. So I used her favorite colors and her bindrune to decorate it.

I am still waiting on stencils and black iron studs from Amazon to finish the shield, but I wanted to get this posted for those that may be considering this shield boss. The boss is as close to perfect as one could get. Beautiful work and finish. It came nicely packaged with a light coat of grease or light oil. (wash with soap and water before applying any finish). For this particular finish I scuffed the surface with 240 grit sandpaper, one coat of spray KILZ, one coat of a good primer, and two final coats of flat black. For reference, the shield diameter is 24". Now, where is that rascal Ivar the Boneless...........

They are a bit large to be historical and the shape is a bit off, but I was in a hurry and the price was right! Very solid. I don't love the bright finish, but could have fire blackened them and taken a peen hammer to them to roughen up the look.

Ended up using it on a home made shield for knight fighting and its holding up pretty well!

I had set this item aside for my project without opening it. When I looked at it the top is not hemispherical but flat. When they did the spinning to manufacture it, they did not start at the top. You can see where they started doing the spinning to make the dome. Also there are burn marks near where they started. I wish I had examined it before the return date expired. Not I am stuck with it. This item was supposed to be an exact replacement for a boss I ordered a few years ago that was great. I reordered it thinking it would be the same as the one previously purchased. Sadly it is not.

Was a great buy, shipped fast and was well oiled. Worked perfectly for the sheild I built, will definitely recommend, and I'll be using it for future builds

This shield boss/"umbo" is strong. It is very well spun and drilled. I used it on my 48"x32" Scutum for a heavy Roman Infantryman. Now I think I'm going buy another to make a Velites round shield too. You can make a very fun shield for a kid with this! and it will protect their little hand wonderfully. I recommend this boss! It's a great combination of thickness, size, strength, weight. I am very happy.

Esta a mi gusto excelente, y puede dársele maltrato y aguanta muy bien, solo que si haces un escudo vikingo mide bien el interior y el exterior antes de cortar el agujero y marca los puntos a perforar.... Nota si es un escudo grande de unos 80 a 90cm no uses triplay de más de 6 mm para que el peso sea manejable

It is 14g. I do HMB/ACW and SCA rattan. I trust this way more than I trust any plastic boss SCA uses. I'm planning to use this on a center grip HMB shield.
