Meet Calvin—a chaos-loving six-year-old—and Hobbes, his witty tiger friend. This first collection launches the iconic strip and friendship with snowball fights, time travel, philosophical musings, and original humor that captures the magic of childhood. This is only the beginning! The very first volume of Calvin and Hobbes introduces the world to the most unforgettable duo in comics: Calvin, a wildly imaginative six-year-old, and Hobbes, his sharp-witted tiger companion who springs to life when no one else is watching. Together they mix everyday childhood events with adventure, rebellion, satire, and laughter—whether they’re building mutant snowmen, outsmarting babysitters, or pondering life’s biggest questions under the stars. Originally published in newspapers between November 1985 and August 1986, these early strips showcase the humor, heart, and razor-sharp wit that would make Calvin and Hobbes a global phenomenon. This debut volume also features exclusive original content with a foreword by Pulitzer Prize–winning cartoonist Garry Trudeau. Highlights from this collection include: The cardboard box as spaceship, time machine, and invention lab Calvin’s epic dinosaur daydreams interrupting schoolwork Monsters lurking under the bed (with Hobbes playing along) Snowball fights, sledding crashes, and bizarre snow sculptures Calvin’s ongoing battles with homework, babysitters, and classmate and neighbor Susie Derkins. Philosophical banter on everything from free will to the environment. With expressive artwork and storytelling that balances chaos with insight, Bill Watterson transformed the antics of one mischievous boy and his tiger into something timeless. Both laugh-out-loud funny and quietly profound, this debut collection captures the spark that made Calvin and Hobbes a fan favorite from the very beginning. A delight for both longtime devotees and brand-new readers, this is the introduction to one of the most beloved and imaginative worlds ever created. CLASSIC SPACEMAN SPIFF
I loved this book as a kid and I wanted to share the joy with my own family. My stepdaughter dove right in and cuddled up with this under a blanket with a flashlight, even after lights out; which is the perfect way to read this. I can't wait to buy all the books to have in my own house and have the kids learn the elusive rules of Calvin Ball. Buy it, even if you read it in the past, it still holds up and is great today.

Calvin and Hobbes, we love you!
Bought this for my 7 year old who loves comics, and its been a hit! It was nostalgic for me, and so fun to have him excited to read it each morning. He has read it in it's entirety 4 days in a row now. He was a little disappointed that it was not in color, but got over it quickly! I think this is a great one for those kids who feel like reading chapter books can be daunting. Starting with comics is the way all of my kids have caught the reading bug. Old school comics are the way to go!

Love C+H
I got this, and all the other Calvin + Hobbes books for my dad, as he used to have a lot of them before my ex stepmother took them in their divorce a few years ago. I grew up stealing those books from him to read, and we had a lot of good memories around those books and reading them together. He loved them, and the comics are still as amazing as I remember them being <3

My favorite comic
Calvin and Hobbes was an enormously popular comic in all major newspapers in the USA. The story is about a six-year old boy, Calvin and his stuffed tiger, Hobbes. For Calvin, Hobbes is a ferocious big tiger, for everybody else, it is just a small stuffed puppet. Calvin and Hobbes where two famous philosophers and I do not think it is by accident that the two main charactors of this comic are named after them. They often have philosophical discussions, especally when they are racing in a cart down a steep dangerous slope, and almost always there is something to these discussions. Calvin is an egocentric boy, doing everything except what he should do (like his homework), while Hobbes has a dim view on humankind and is convinced of the superiority of tigers. Calvin has an incredible phantasy and invents a lot of games to play with Hobbes and also alter-ego characters like space-man spiff, jet pilots, dinosaurs or both, like a Tyrannosaurus Rex flying a jet fighter. These stories usualy start in Calvins phantasy world, like spaceman spiff landing on a remote planet in another galaxy being attacked by hideous alien monster who suddenly turns out to be Mrs. Wormwood, his ground school teacher. Calvin and Hobbes are my favorite comics. It is difficult to describe in a review like this, but I find the sudden switches and disconnects between Calvins phantasy world involving aliens dinosaurs etc. and the cold reality involving his parents, teachers and the neighbor girl Susy extremely funny. Bill Watterson uses a very rich vocabulary and especially for non-native english speakers (like myself) there is a lot to learn here.
