Developing the Leader Within You Review: An Excellent Analysis on the Importance of Leadership - To be perfectly honest, reading this book was a very uncertain (perhaps wild) choice for me. When assigned to read a book for a class based on fundamentals of leadership and/or small group communication, I chose this book on the desertcart.com website because it was the one that might be the most relatable and interesting to me as a college student. Theoretically, I could have opened it to discover a piece of literature wrapped in boredom and unsubstantiated generalizations regarding leadership. Thankfully, the book is a delight to read. It is a surprisingly captivating piece of non-fiction literature. Many books of this type that I have read in the past have offered broad generalizations, along with no stories, facts, or examples to back them up. However, this book is a completely different story. The author, John C. Maxwell, uses loads of wonderful quotes, stories, and lists to generate evidence for his very specific beliefs and claims concerning the hierarchy of leadership. The book also does an excellent job chronicling the various characteristics of leadership. The reader will easily be able to interpret the message that Maxwell tries repeatedly to project within the book: Leadership is a key attribute of any group. Without it, change, which is fundamental to the continued success and/or existence of any small group or society, will be hampered. Therefore, every individual should strive to meet the demands and needs of a group by gaining the many traits of leadership discussed within this book. Overall, the book is easy to follow and has a review section at the end of each chapter, which proved to be a valuable tool when used for further comprehension of the subject matter. According to the book, there is even an on-line leadership skills assessment survey. Unfortunately, an error message continually popped up on my computer's screen when trying to access the link, and when I tried to load the home page, it repeatedly made my computer freeze. After three or four failed attempts, I gave up on this endeavor. Perhaps other readers will be more successful in this endeavor. In conclusion, Developing the Leader Within You is a great introduction to the concept of leadership. The book is very well laid out, and Maxwell does a superb job of relaying the basics of leadership so that a wide variety of readers can understand and benefit from what he is saying. It provided me with much insight into just how important leadership is in terms of succeeding in our society today. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand more about the principles of leadership on an organizational and personal level. Review: Review of Developing the Leader within You - I was truly inspired by John Maxwell's, Developing the Leader within You. The book was chosen as part of my Small Group Communication class assignment and I was not disappointed. I found the book to be very insightful into what it takes to become a successful leader. The book is broken down into key levels of development that elaborate on basic principles of leadership. I very much became engaged in reading the book, Maxwell spends a lot of time talking about vision and says, "My observation over the last twenty years has been that all effective leaders have a vision of what they must accomplish. That vision becomes the energy behind every effort and the force that pushes through all the problems." His book is very visionary, and inspirational, and certainly helps one to understand the dynamics involved in what it takes to become an effective leader. The book reinforced the principles being learned in my class about leadership. I definitely could connect to Maxwell's style of writing and his connection to people and what influences them to become better leaders. When you read each chapter of this book you start to understand the principles involved in leadership and how one must incorporate all principles to become a successful leader. Also enjoyable was the stories embedded in the book which added clarity to the topics being discussed. When I finished reading Maxwell's book, my thoughts were that I would definitely like to read more work done by the author.

A Book for the Leaders AND the Followers
"Developing the Leader Within You" by John. C. Maxwell is a worthy read. It is easy to follow and is supplemented by graphs and charts when more complicated principles of leadership are involved. Maxwell also manages to keep his words of wisdom on a serious matter from being characterless by giving you personal stories from his past as well as anecdotes about and by famous individuals. Differing from other leadership books, it is not focused on how to change your followers but on how to change yourself so that people will want to follow you. Maxwell has a very to the point definition of leadership and that is, "leadership is influence." It is not about a title or position. Leadership depends on your ability to inspire others. The strategies Maxwell describes in order to become influential are not tricks or quick fixes; they are life-changing virtues that require great effort by the prospective leader. The qualities he details throughout the book are not traits that should belong solely to leaders but to all respectable individuals who cooperate and communicate with others at any level of personal or work life. The topics Maxwell covers, by chapter, are influence, priorities, integrity, creating positive change, problem solving, attitude, people, vision, and self-discipline. These are things we could all work on, not just those looking to lead. I found his chapter on integrity to be the most important and effective. He stresses the importance of having your words and deeds matchup through integrity. If integrity is maintained, you can lead by example. Throughout this chapter, Maxwell reminds us of a principle we all learned as children, but that has gone out of sight for most adults. For those who are not looking to take on the responsibility of being a leader, this book is still worth reading. It will enable you to recognize the efforts of effective leaders around you. It may also motivate you to make positive changes in your life. For those who are looking to take on the responsibility of being a leader, this book is helpful in laying the foundation and inspiring change within you that will spread to your followers. Also, for those looking to be leaders, there are helpful worksheets throughout the book that could be implemented for organizational and inspirational purposes.
