1) 3.25" or 8cm (approx) 2) mine is currently loaded pretty well, as well as having acrylic boxes of vitamins on top and is stable. I don't feel that removing the drawers would make it unstable, but I'm not sure how much weight you're considering. It feels sturdy and good enough for moderate use.
