Brilliant, Broken Meg
I believe I was eleven or twelve years old the first time I read A Wrinkle in Time, so let's call it 1967. I still have vivid memories of it. Since I have now reached the age when I have to look in the microwave to find out what's in there when it beeps*, this is pretty impressive. My clearest memory of it is how it felt to read it. "Enjoyment" or "pleasure" was not it. It hurt to read A Wrinkle in Time. Well, that's not entirely true. The Mrs W's were sometimes a pleasure -- brave and kind and occasionally funny. But overall, it was a hard book to read. I give myself credit for being wise enough to know, even at the age of eleven, that sometimes if you push through you will be rewarded. The reward was brilliant, broken Meg. I was pretty broken myself at the time, so I felt her. (I still am, but now I know all the best people are.) I had never met a character like Meg before. There are some Meg-lite characters in books I have read since. Most of those were written by authors who, I am sure, themselves read A Wrinkle in Time. But these other authors compromise. Rough edges have been sanded down in the Meg-lites you meet in other fiction. If you see a Meg-lite on the screen (TV or movies), she is almost certain to be pretty or at least cute. L'Engle's Meg is uncompromised, unsmoothed, ungentled.I looked at some of the other Goodreads reviews. Many reviewers point out the flaws in A Wrinkle in Time. I agree entirely! It is a deeply flawed book, If we start listing what's wrong with it, we quickly get into Captain America territory -- "I can do this all day!" So it's a matter of how you judge the whole. I don't take an average. Meg's greatness trumps everything that is wrong with A Wrinkle in Time in my judgment.*OK, that is not actually true.

“It was a dark and stormy night...”Okay, I haven’t read A Wrinkle in Time since fifth grade, so I was kind of nervous going into this. Yet, I was very pleasantly surprised, and I’m even more excited to see the new movie adaptation in March! I mean, this reads a little “old” and “simple” but it was still such a delight to read. I will say that I didn’t remember any of the religious/spiritual aspects that were woven in, so apparently fifth grade Melanie, who went to a Catholic school and everything, just pushed those out of her mind throughout the years. The basic premise of A Wrinkle in Time, that I’m sure you all know, stars a young girl named Meg is one of four siblings in her family, and both of her parents are scientists. Meg and Charles are very intelligent, therefore outcasts, but where their twin siblings, who are of normal IQ, fit in just fine. One day, her father goes missing and Meg, Charles, and their new friend, Calvin, meet a very peculiar trio, who take them on an intergalactic adventure that they will never forget. They essentially travel by folding or “wrinkling” time.Overall, this was a super enjoyable read, that totally did give me a swift kick in the nostalgia feels. Yet, I’m not sure how well it would hold up if this was your first time experiencing the story. I do feel like there is a little something here for everyone, and even though this is considered a middle grade book, I do think it holds up pretty well for most ages. And honestly? Even reading this in 2018, this is still a very unique book.“There will no longer be so many pleasant things to look at if responsible people do not do something about the unpleasant ones.”This is a story about love, and family, and faith, and being able to think for yourself. I can totally understand why this is a literary classic, and I’m so happy I reread it! And now I’m totally pumped for the movie!

A favorite author
I read this years ago after my sister read it. I read as many Newberry award books as I could that was in the elementary library as I knew they would be good, fascinating, and wonderful.

Fun romp
The first time I heard this story was in 1965, when my teacher read it to the class, she only read the first book in the trilogy but it was kind of fun. I always wondered about the rest of the stories related.Run the clock forward fifty years and here is the trilogy, and I am basically a kid at heart. I found it to be a fun read and well written. Sure it was written with a younger audience in mind but if you have even a little bit of the wide eyed imagination of the young hiding behind the face of an adult you show the world then let the kid in you out and allow your imagination to take over and have some fun.

Good for any age
This trilogy is just great. I originally bought this for my 10 year granddaughter, but, since I had never read Wrinkle in Time I figured I would read the whole book. A good read even for a 76 year old grandmother.

Nice book!
Amazing story, as always. The book is printed on lovely soft paper, which flops open satisfyingly.(I dislike hard paperback books that you have to pry open to read...)

Nostalgic fantasy trilogy.
An excellent story - the type we would have read in the 60's - no computers, wi-fi, very little TV, etc. An excellent stretching of one's imagination. DT.
