(2 BOTTLES COME WITH ORDER) Pure Lye Sodium hydroxide, also known as Caustic Soda or Lye, is a product that is used in the creation of soap, detergent, paper, textiles and drinking water. It is a chemical base and comes packaged as a white solid. Soap making: Fats and oils, by themselves, do not mix with water. Sodium hydroxide breaks up the triglyceride in fats and oils and turns the fatty acids into sodium salts. The salts reduce the surface tension in liquids and allow grease to be easily washed away with water. Try making a pure soap with no perfume, fragrances, dyes or additives that can irritate your skin. Using a pure soap with only the glycerin can cleanse and improve your skin condition – no matter what that condition is. Pure lye soap will sooth insect bites and actually repel insects with its residue. Try shaving your lye soap and using it as a laundry detergent, or rub a bar directly on a problem stain. Lye soap has been found to be as effective as commercial products on the market.

Real pretzels use lye
I tried boiling pretzels in baking soda. The dough gets soggy and hard to handle. They bake up well but are too salty and not all that delicious.I tried dipping pretzels in washing soda. They were much easier to handle and cooked well bit still not all that good.I finally gave in and tried lye. It wasn't as scary and bloggers made it put to be. The dough was easy to handle after dipping and the pretzels were everything a delicious pretzel aren't too be.I did redip my pretzels in a bowl of fresh water after dipping them in lye water. I wasn't sure if that was necessary so I left one undipped. It had a more pronounced pretzel flavor but I preferred the ones I rinsed in fresh water.I got the idea of rinsing after dipping from the recipe that used washing soda.

Wear gloves and take your time.
Bought this to make authentic NY style bagels when boiling them. You really need to take precautions when using. Unfortunately the plastic jug seems to charge the particles and when you pour it’s a free for all. Crystals are bouncing all over the place. I did get a slight chemical burn, but just washed it off for a bit and all was good. By the way, it makes your stainless Steel pans look like brand new on the inside.

Jumping jehosaphat!
So here is my review on this sodium hydroxide lye. I use lye to make soaps from animal fats so I purchased this stuff to do a few batches because it was cheap. The only real grip I had was the container. Unfortunately the container produces a static charge that, under the right circumstances, can send beads of highly reactive basic compounds flying around your kitchen while pouring. Now, airborne lye is not so much a problem for me as I keep some vinegar on hand when working with such substances, but it did catch me a bit off guard. When pouring highly reactive, caustic, chemicals you really aren't expecting them to do a free willy impersonation. That being said this stuff worked exactly as advertised and made some rather nice soap. Just be sure to do this in a safe area and have plenty of acid on hand. Be safe!

Fantastic pretzels
Its lye, its highly caustic. Wear lung protection. I did not cause that's how I roll (yeah I'm an idiot). Its very fine and some powder got airborne when I was measuring/dissolving in water even though I was being very careful handling it. Immediately took a minor hit to the lungs. Was not happy about that. But the pretzels were amazing and next time will wear a suitable dust mask and do the dissolving outside. If you have a fume hood lol you may not need the respiratory protection.

Performed well, easy to use, good looking soap in final product.
I ordered this lye to use in making homemade soap, and was excited by the price! I make soaps fairly regularly and like to play around with different kinds, so a good source of lye is great! I had no problem using this. It heated itself well, filtered well before adding to the fats, and performed beautifully during the saponification process. My final products are really nice, with no nasty film or residue on the soap. The product looks nice and clean when using. I would say it performed as expected for lye, but it may be one I continue to order instead of shopping locally because it felt very steady and reliable during the process.I will say, I thought I liked the container a great deal...but....it does cause the lye to fly around and jump because of the static charges that are happening as the lye moves about inside. I had read other reviews before my purchase and thought that was not too big a deal..but when they say it jumps around..they MEAN it. Be careful when pouring for sure.I paid regular price for this item and did not receive it using any coupon or promo codes.

Nice safe, easy to pour HDPE container
Worked great for my pretzels. The best part is the container - it's very safe and pourable, as compared to getting it in a pail or bag. BTW, I don't make soap anymore but I've probably made over 100 pounds of it in my day and I don't believe you'd need to specifically get "food grade" lye.

Soaps
Bought this for my first time soap making & works great. Made 4lbs of soap so far with no issues in quality. Kinda pricey but if I can get 10+lbs of soap out of the one bottle I can live with it.
