A little wide but great way reduce waste

Great idea! I preload them so I'm not struggling in the morning. They are plastic so they might not last long, but I'm pretty easy on them, for kid's use - might not hold up well. 2 suggestions, when loading slightly squeeze the fork end a little - that puts tension on the floss. second - make sure your floss is not twisted.

I have tight teeth and always hated flossing because my fingers would be purple from how tightly the floss would pull around them. I eventually found GUM FlossPiks - the plastic molded little floss holders - and they made life so much better and I learned to floss daily! But, then I noticed how much plastic I was putting in the trash and wasn't feeling good about that.But, my kids dentist sent them home with one of these Flossaids and I saw I could just use my own floss with this clever holder. Took a little learning of a new angle to hold it at, but didn't take long. Now, only about 12" of floss ends up in the trash daily.I do 2 wraps around the post at the end - sometimes 3 - and that prevents the floss slipping and loosening. My floss sometimes breaks, which is annoying, but not the fault of this FlossAid.

After watching the customer video and reading some of the reviews, I feel I have to chime in.The video reviewer should be using longer floss to begin with, about 18". Wrap it at least once, as per the directions, but I've been using these types of forked flossers for 30 years, and this specific type for at least 15 years, and this brand for about 5. I recommend wrapping the floss around the disc twice using the basic technique shown in the video. However string the floss straight up the arm of the fork member nearest where the floss exits the disc wrapping; don't cross over the open space between the forks. In other words just follow the groove straight along the arms.Wrap under the arm tip, cross over to the other arm, go under the tip and over to the topside, and then follow the groove in the arm back toward the disc - do not cross over like in the video. Then pinch the fork tips slightly together, hold them there while pulling the floss taut, and wrap the free end of the floss several times or more around the disc - you should be wrapping in the same direction around the disc as you did in the beginning. Leave a couple inches hanging so you can discern the unused free end from the turns you made when you first set up for stringing. You can rewind that free end later to get use out of more floss; I typically get 3 days' worth of use out of one length of cut floss. If the floss isn't taut enough, simply unwind your last wraps and try again; it takes some time to get the hang of the proper tensioning technique.The floss should be tensioned enough across the tips that it won't slip off a tip while being used in your teeth. BUT do not overcompress the forks, as they will break under too much tension. My only gripe with these types of flossers is that eventually they will break, and replacements have been hard to find in local stores. Fortunately Amazon carries them, but order more than one. They aren't "wimpy", but they have limits, and mine usually last several years before an arm snaps off during stringing.I tend to use one stringing for two flossings of all teeth. If the flosser isn't used for many hours I've learned to dunk the business end in a small cup of listerine for a minute. Bacteria can grow on the used floss, then you are reinoculating your gums with them the next flossing. So either dunk the used floss or unwind the floss from the free end you initially left, remove it from the two arms, wind it 2 or 3 times more around the disk, and restring it so you can use fresh floss. Should the floss get stringy or shows snags, it's time to restring or remove it and put on a new l8" length of floss. Regardless, rinse the device after each use in hot water or mouthwash, and perhaps again just before the next use.

I don't know how this product got 80 positive reviews by people who actually use this product. But here is the raw review from a real user.Please do not waste $8 on this product. I highly recommend to avoid this product. If you feel experimental, perhaps you can go ahead and purchase this. Make sure to ask for the full refund within 30 days, if you are not happy with this product.1) It doesn't hold the floss string for an entire cleaning session. After few floss strokes, the floss comes off from the holder. So you have to re-adjust numerous times to get it right. I had to re-adjust the floss string on the knob about 10 times for one flossing session.2) You have shift the floss string for every other stroke or so. To do so, you have to shift the floss string to the clean section of the floss string and re-adjust the floss string on the holder. To do that, you rotate the floss string around this non-moving knob. (another bad design element).3) It wastes floss more than it should. Almost twice times as much, at least. If you cut your floss in advance and place it on this holder, you will waste 2 or 3 times floss in length than you would typically use.4) You can do without cutting the floss string in advance, but that just creates even more hassle of using this product.5) Your teeth hurt after the cleaning session, because the holder puts more pressure between your gum and tooth. Thus, the floss gets inserted deeply into the gum. That makes you bleed more. Normally, your teeth shouldn't hurt after flossing, but it does after using this product.6) The holder is too big. Who designed this product???Bottom Line: Just don't get it. If you can, just use the floss by itself. You won't waste floss, and you won't go through much hassle of using this product. If you get it, ask for the full refund within 30 days.
