Maybe not best for anything but grinding/pulverizing.
It's my first mortar and pestle, so I tried making guacamole completely in this mortar. Other than for mashing the garlic and maybe the cilantro, I see no reason to use this type of product for making guacamole, especially if you like a nice, large batch that this product can't make since it only holds 16 fl. oz. Ripe avocado mashes easily by fork, I don't want my tomato pieces completely destroyed, and finely-diced onion, cilantro and garlic are more flavorful and have a better mouth-feel than as a mush. However, I do plan on using this mortar and pestle to grind hard, dry or fresh spices such as rosemary and, hmm, well, maybe there are other uses for this. I'm not sure what good the lid is for either, since the pestle really needs to travel around to mortar's interior when in use, and the lid restricts that movement. However, I learned that the inside edges of the mortar are slightly sharp, so when working the pestle vigorously, it's easy to damage one's fingers, and the lid stops that, although it still isn't useful since a good range of motion with the pestle can't be attained with the lid in place. The lid isn't to protect contents, since contents shouldn't be stored in it, and most of the action during use doesn't cause contents to eject from the bowl. Finally, the piece of rubber tubing that came as a "garlic peeler" only does the same thing as rubbing garlic cloves between one's thumb and fingers. For all I know, it is a by-product from another product and not manufactured like some name-brand garlic peelers that are of better material and design. Overall, the idea of a garlic peeler is slightly lame anyway, since the tips of the cloves still need to be trimmed, but for people who are afraid of garlic odor on their fingertips, it would be favorable. As for the mortar and pestle, however, it seems like a good product, especially if the non-skid base will be durable after many uses and cleanings. Oh, it IS heavy, so even though it can only just barely hold 16 fluid ounces, it might be too heavy for it to be bigger.

It is solid, heavy and gets the job done. I LOVE IT!
I love this mortar and pestle. They send an extra (second) pestle and an extra second soft self stick cover for the bottom so it won't scratch surfaces. This will last a lifetime. It came with cleaning instructions and how to season it for first time use. I just clean it with water, no soap. I'm afraid soap would absorb into the mortar and cause a funky taste in the herbs or garlic or whatever I am crushing. I have used apple cider vinegar or lemon and salt and then rinse warm water, instead of soap, so it does get sanitized. It dries very quickly, but I use a paper towel to get the little pool of water out if the bottom of mortar. It is fantastic quality and worth the money purchasing it. I highly recommend this to anyone considering buying one of these. You get more for your money, with this one! Leave the ceramic ones alone - they never work as well as this granite one.

Seasoning!!
Just want you to know that seasoning this before using it is pretty labor-intensive. It is really important that you not only clean it well and let it dry, but that you also grind white rice in there to finish the seasoning. The directions make it sound easy, but grinding the rice is work!! It takes at least two grindings of the rice (3 Tablespoons each time), and maybe up to 5 grindings. Each grinding can take anywhere from 8-15 minutes of fairly intense labor. (We have opted to take our time, doing a little at a time.) But this gives the inside a very nice finish and helps get the rest of the grit out. Also, we opted to NOT use the garlic and seasonings called for by the directions as we did not want that strong flavor in the granite. Reading blogs about granite mortars, it is recommended to grind coarse salt after grinding very aromatic spices to help neutralize the flavors. This is a very solid piece and will last, I'm sure, for many happy years. Look forward to finishing the seasoning and using soon!!

Great hefty mortar and pestle set.
Absolutely love this mortar and pestle set. After reading the reviews, many said they received a second pestle. I however, did not. I’m not a gadget person but I do love the garlic peeler (the “black pestle grip” as the one person calls it in their review, LOL!). The really important thing is to season it as the instructions call for. Unlike granite and marble countertops, which are sealed, a mortar and pestle are not. So it’s very important to season it. The little insert comes with a quick instruction guide on how to do it. You can also Google how to do it. Because I use mine mainly for spices and savory concoctions, I went with the garlic/cumin method. If you use yours for sweet things mainly, there are other methods. This is a very heavy/solid set. Just be sure not to run it through the dishwasher or anything. Mine also can with an extra bumper to put on the bottom when he one that’s on there wears off. And the lid is a nice touch as well.

Great product
It was very difficult to choose a Mortar and Pestle Set with so many on Amazon. I ordered this one because it came with two Pestles. I have another Mortar that is missing its Pestle and I thought it would work for it. This thing is bigger than I thought it would be but it is great. I like the directions on seasoning it and cleaning it. Very easy to follow and do. I just felt like I wasted some of my spices though. I use this mostly to grind egg shells for my garden but will use it for other things like making tea. It is heavy and very sturdy, the pad protects our granite counter tops too. I am glad it included another one so as the first pad wears from use I can put a new one on. I like this and so does my wife.

Good product and price
Just received in the mail today.I had to “season” it because using it when I’m cooking. I grinded garlic, raw rice and pepper with it and it works great!Easy and quick to grind. The mortar is very sturdy and perfect height and size. And the pestle isn’t heavy but has a nice weight to it.Easy to clean and dries fairly quick.

Took Some Work to Prepare for First Time Use
This is a great mortar and pestle set, it does the job of crushing my spice perfectly. I was so excited to use it when it arrived but it literally took me a full day to prepare for it's first use. I had to wash it, let it dry, then crush rice to a fine powder (which was tedious so I took about 5 breaks) and then washing it again. Too much work when all I wanted was to start marinating my food asap.

Find a better one
The media could not be loaded. It’s not horrible, but I don’t love it. It discoloured after just a few uses, the bottom sole is completely off-centered, and it’s a bit on the small side. It is heavy and feels nice, and it does the job, I just think there are many options out there and this wouldn’t be my first choice.

Queen of Mortars
Works perfectly. My old one was a smaller one and i didn't think I would need a bigger size. However; having this size I realize that I can do more with it than with the previous one. Also the heavy weight and the anti-slippery something on the bottom makes it very steady while working with it. It is also a beautiful peace, a decoration of my kitchen. Really good value for the money. Cannot comment on sturdiness as I just bought a week ago. My impression is that it will last for a long time.... I'm really glad I bought it.
