Interesting witch movie

fantasy movie...very good...family friendly

This is a fun dragons-and-sorcery flick, with both the 3D and the storyline scoring 4 stars. The story is reasonably good if a little campy in spots, and the 3D is a notch up from simply acceptable. It has reasonable depth, and does not fall "flat" the way some other almost-two-dimensional 3D movies do. However, the 3D looks and feels a little "off" in spots (if you suddenly feel like your eyes are going slightly cross-eyed, that's what I'm talking about), and some of the rendered graphics LOOK rendered rather than realistic, for which I dock 1 star. However, if you are a 3D fan this one is worth grabbing.

WOW!!! I don't know how I missed this one when it came out but I am glad I was able to find it on Amazon.com & add it to my collection. I saw one review calling this a B-rate movie...Not at all!!! Plenty of big named stars preforming well & the special effects are top notch! I saw another review claiming Jeff Bridges was hard to understand, and it is true that he adopts a bit of a speech impediment . He may have done this to help him pull off a English accent. It works well for his battle hardened character, I had a friend who after breaking his jaw sounded very much like Jeff Bridges character in this movie. Julianne Moore does a fine job as the evil "Mother of all Witches" And this is certainly not Ben Barnes first foray into the Sword & Sorcery genre. The other creatures & Warlocks are recognizable from other films & I love the way the witches & warlocks have alternate creatures they can turn into this is a nice touch & really raises the bar when it comes down to the battle scenes! I don't want to give away spoilers so I will just say there's a lot more going on than just good against evil in this movie. Now I am 50 years old & I tend to be generous when rating movies even if they are lower budget movies, I figure if they entertain me on said given budget I rate them high. But I didn't notice a lack of budget in either the actors hired or the special effects but just to make sure I asked my 19 year old daughter & she agreed this is far from B-rate material. If you are a fan of the Sword & Sorcery genre I don't think you will regret adding this one to your collection. This movie is action packed and fast paced with a touch of humor to keep it from being to dark. basically its fun for the whole family but might be a bit to creepy for little children. While the movie is fast paced it still manages enough character development to endear the characters to the viewer & the characters are complex enough to hold your interest.

Here's the thing: Seventh Son is based off a book (which I have not read, so, there's going to be something more for those who want to see their book characters played by Jeff Bridges) and it was a long time coming. When I saw the first teaser trailer several years ago my immediate assumption was "oh wow, they're making a movie of The Witcher!". Nope. Something called Seventh Son...Hmm...After reading up on the book a bit though, and making a few guesses from the trailer, I decided "OK well, it's not The Witcher, but it might be the closest we get to a Hollywood-released film LIKE The Witcher. That is, an old monster-hunter, one of the last in a line of a noble profession now all but extinct, must train up a new 'nobody' apprentice to help him battle a resurgent Ancient Evil that nobody believes in and, presumably, take his place once ole' Ger...er, Jeff Bridges is ready to head on to retirement. Honestly, with so few Hollywood fantasy movies based on non big-hit book series, I was thinking this could be a pretty good setup. Good plot concept, some nice lines in the trailer, 2015 special effects, etc... Sadly the actors' abilities and the scriptwriter's poor choice of lines for those abilities made me feel like rather than watching the aforementioned plot setup in a fantasy universe, I was watching some sort of strange allegory for the actors themselves. IE, here's poor Jeff Bridges, a great actor, trying desperately to bring up his young 'nobody' protege in a world where nobody believe in making fantasy movies...wait...but we do. And thaaaaat's why this movie only gets 3 stars in my opinion. For a 2-hour, high-budget fantasy movie made by Hollywood, a translation of a book, a mix of new and old actors, and being a (currently) standalone film, this movie works alright. It's not the most amazing film ever, but it has some nice special effects, some nice unique monsters, and a decent plot basis. Unfortunately, those things alone are not enough to make a great movie in this day and age. This can't hold a candle to epics like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and so on. It has none of the moral depth, none of the character development, and none of the WEIGHT of those films. So, it's a popcorn flick. OK. Sometimes that's nice for a one-off action film. Unfortunately, it's not even that, really. It struck me as I was walking out of the theater that the movie felt incredibly short. Besides the fact that I never really 'lost' myself in the movie, I realized I kept getting distracted. The movie wasn't interesting or deep enough to keep me from watching the guy checking the soccer game on his phone a few rows in front of me. That was more interesting. Sad. But why was I not interested, or why did it feel short and non-engaging? Mainly because of terrible, terrible pacing. Not long before I'd watched Dracula Untold. Like Seventh Son, DU had a few well-known actors and a few lesser known ones, was a stand-alone, was a movie translation of another story, and was a one-off action movie. But for all that, I forgot myself while watching Dracula Untold. I forgot I was in a theater, I cared about the characters, I chuckled a few times, etc. When it ended I looked at my watch and let out a deep breath, thinking "OK, time to return to the real world". It didn't FEEL like 2 hours. This movie did. The dialogue falls flat. The character development is nonexistent. The villain is...a villain? Besides SAYING so we don't really understand why she's so terribly evil (I mean compared to this random knight dude who says he's the hero...) until the end. A scene that perfectly encapsulated my feeling of this movie: Jeff Bridges' character (I can't even care enough to remember the name, haha) shows up at the protege's house. His mom seems to know Jeff. No idea why. Still didn't at the end of the film. It's that kind of "hmm, maybe if I'd read the book I'd catch the deep subtext hinted at here, but I have NO idea what's going on" kind of feeling. So after a few moments of glaring/making eyes at each other oddly, Jeff gets down to business and asks for the kid to come with him. He's the seventh son etc etc. So this son dude just shrugs and goes "yeah OK. I'll go." No emotion. His mom seems more perturbed...hmm, maybe she's going to hold him back, tell him how it's dangerous, etc...? Nope. Calls him out to the backyard to hand him some sort of talisman and delivers the one terrible line in the trailer that should have tipped me off. "Be wise, be careful..." Then sighs. Does anyone actually say that like that? Maybe I should read the book. But, in this film that kind of line was sadly common...

This movie has and is what a epic adventure movie should be...the story , the action, the graphics are all top notch..trust me you'll love this movie and watch it over and over again.

I loved it for all the nostalgic reasons. The only thing I did not like was Jeff Bridges and his "Mush Mouth" speaking voice. I am sure it was the Directors idea. The rest of the movie was fun and cool. I was a big fan of the Ray Harryhausen movies so this one is a bit of the modern version of those classics. It was a little corny, the women were fine, the creatures were fierce and the action was wicked cool.

I enjoyed this movie a lot!! So does anyone I know...not sure why such bad reviews, maybe depends on what your expectations are -before you watch this movie?!.... Happy to see quite the actors in such a movie, I found story line entertaining, great effects, waited till I could get it on Blu-Ray, love it when movies come in duo's, gave the dvd to family member, I think is a great movie, I know they probably won't make a sequel, but I still enjoyed this movie a lot!! Seventh Son stammt aus dem Jahr 2014 und wurden von Amerika, Großbritannien und Russland produziert. Magie und Legenden beherrschen die Welt. Doch das meiste davon ist bösartig und wird von nur wenigen Kämpfern bekriegt. So auch der letzte verbliebene Krieger John Gregory, Mitglied eines mystischen Ordens (Jeff Bridges), der seinen Lehrling beim Kampf gegen eine übermächtige Hexe verliert und nun auf der Suche nach dem siebenten Sohn ist, der ihn des Weges begleiten soll. Er findet diesen (Ben Barnes), doch ist kaum Zeit für seine Lehre. Die Hexe Malkin (Julianne Moore) war einst die große Liebe des letzten Kriegers und sie macht sich bereit in der Blutmondnacht die Macht über die Welt zu erringen. Doch der siebente Sohn hat Parapsychologische Fähigkeiten die ihm helfen sich gegen das Böse zu behaupten. Unterstützt wird er von einer Hexe die sich entschließt lieber auf der guten Seite zu stehen. Die Produzenten die Godzilla und 300: Rise of an Empire produzierten, nahmen eine Fantasy-Kinderbuch-Story namens Spook - Der Schüler des Geisterjägers von Joseph Delaney und formten es zu diesem Film um, wo der Lehrling um etliche Jahre älter ist als im Kinderbuch (dort war er glaub ich erst 14 Jahre alt) und auch so andere Charaktere anders vorkamen. Der Film hat schöne Aufnahmen von Monstern, Kämpfen und Schauplätzen. Es hätten halt die Animationen länger sein können um die Monster auch richtig genießen zu können. Aber wie schon in Godzilla, waren die Einstellungen nur sehr kurz bemessen. Es sollte wohl die Phantasie der Zuseherinnen und Zuseher beflügeln und Kosten sparen. Aber die Effekte hätten noch um eine Spur besser werden können, dann wären sie perfekt gewesen. Aber so waren sie auch sehenswert und machten viel Spaß. Dennoch wirkt der Film alles andere als billig, was bei solchen Verfilmung allzu oft der Fall ist. Zum Glück bei diesem nicht. Mir persönlich hat die Verfilmung sehr gut gefallen, wenn auch mehr Action und Monster wünschenswert gewesen wäre, eine längere Filmdauer wäre schon drinnen gewesen. Aber auch um die einzelnen Charaktere mit einem tiefergehenderen Hintergrund auszustatten. Das hätte dieser Verfilmung dann noch den letzten Schliff verpasst und nicht so oberflächig wirken lassen. Man merkte dies auch dass einige der entfernten Szenen unter den Extras noch gut in den Film gepasst hätten. So wird bei den geschnittenen Szenen erklärt wie lange die Hexe im Kerkerloch sich aufhielt und wie dieser Kerker beschaffen war. So wirkte es im Film das es nur ein Loch in der Erde ist mit einem Gitter als Guckloch und die Jahrhunderte (?) durch das Land ziehen. Dabei waren es nur 10 Jahre. Da kam einem schon die Frage, wer versorgte die Hexe während der gesamten Gefangenenzeit? Es war daher nicht gut die Szene am Anfang des Filmes so zu kürzen, weil es nur Fragen und Unverständnis hervorrief. Auch das alternative Ende unter den Extrabonus hätte mir als Schluss besser gefallen, es hätte den Abschluss des Filmes besser und befriedigender abgerundet. Es gab auch diverse offizielle Film-Kritiken zu diesem Film dass er Frauenfeindlich und voller Rassismus stecke. Weil eine Hexe immer eine böse Hexe zu sein hat, die am Scheiterhaufen brennen muss. Ganz nachvollziehen kann ich diese Kritik nicht, da es erstens ein paar gute Hexen im Film gab und die Vorurteile von Gregory durch die ständigen Kämpfe gegen das Böse ein Leben lang geprägt wurde. Zudem war die Einstellung im Mittelalter gegenüber angeblichen Hexen auch nicht viel anders. Und das christliche tat in diesem Film sich besonders hervor. Aber es gibt ja bald schon kaum ein Film aus Amerika indem nicht irgendwie auf das Christentum verwiesen wird. Hier auf eine angeblich auf geschichtsvergessen zu pochen ist für mich nicht nachvollziehbar. Gute bzw. weiße Hexen kamen erst viel später in der Literatur vor, anfangs waren sie von Seiten der Kirche immer nur als böse abgetan. Und wenn es nun rassistisch ist gegen Böse Monster vorzugehen, was ist dann in anderen Fantasyfilmen wo auch gegen böse Monster gekämpft wird. Und Monster in einem Fantasyfilm sind in der Regel böse, sonst hätte man keinen Grund gegen sie kämpfen zu müssen. Heißt das jetzt das jeder Fantasyroman und jeder Fantasyfilm wo gegen Monster gekämpft werden darf Rassistisch angehaucht ist??? Auch wurde kritisiert dass alle Helden weiß und alle Bösen dunkelhäutig und weiblich, Araber, Asiaten waren. Stimmt, hier wurde heftig mit dem Klischeeskochlöffel im Hexenkessel gerührt. Aber so manche Figuren wie die Afrikanerin die zur Leopardin wurde, wurden gerade wegen ihrer Nationalität gewählt. Wenn schon geschichtsträchtig erzählt hätte werden müssen, dann wäre wohl eine Weiße Afrikanerin zu dieser Zeit wohl kaum erklärbar gewesen. Auch ein Schwertmeister mit vier Armen stammt nun mal aus dem alten indischen Sagenbereich und hätte auch nicht von einem Weißen verkörpert werden können. Das wäre nur möglich gewesen, wen man die Hintergrundgeschichten der Einzelnen erklärt hätte. Alternativ hätte man wohl andere Fantasygestalten sich ausdenken müssen. Aber Klischees sind nun mal im Filmsektor gang und gäbe um vertraute Gefühlen von Bekanntheit bei den Kinobesuchern hervorzurufen. Ansonsten ist zu bemerken, dass Jeff Bridges die harte, uneinsichtige Weise des alten Kriegers gut hinbekam und Julianne Moore wie immer ihre Rolle perfektioniert hatte - sie war eine perfekte böse Hexe. Qualität der Blu-ray: Laufzeit: 102 Minuten. Bildqualität: Das Bild (1080p High Definition 2,40.1 Letterbox) ist scharf, störungsfrei und die Farben passen. Tonqualität: Der Ton (Deutsch in DTS Digital Surround und Englisch in DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1) ist und die Texte gut verständlich.
