Question 1

On the photo of the purple card - is that a box? The word box has four sounds not three. Wrong!

Accepted Answer

You asked a legitimate and interesting question. These cards are correct and extremely valuable for beginning English reading. The CVC syllable is also called a “closed” syllable because the vowel is closed in and has a “short” vowel sound. The CVC form is the only ones used in these cards. When teaching the words box, fox, and six, it will be important to say that the one letter “x” stands for /ks/. That part is simple.

It gets more complicated when “x” nouns become plural or are present tense verbs in the third person singular position (the he/she/it position). They become two syllable words.:
ax•es, box•es, fox•es, six•es

Even morre fascinating is what happens when “x” words are past participles. They remain one syllable ending in /kst/:
axed, boxed, foxed

Beyond the "x" letter for /ks/, there are different spelling patterns that represent the /ks/ sound, but they are not so tricky.
No matter whether they are nouns or verbs, no matter the number or verb tense, they remain one syllable.:
pick --> picks, picked
cake -->  cakes, caked
walk--> walks, walked
bank -->banks, banked

Yes, you are correct and insightful to recognize that the single letter “x” in most English syllables represents two distinct sounds. The cards are showing three letter CVC syllables. Nothing is wrong about them, so feel confident in using them.
