2014 live album the King Crimson spin-off. Featuring the talents of Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Markus Reuter, Julie Slick and Tobias Ralph; The Crimson ProjeKCT primarily focus on repertoire from the early 1980s through to the mid-90s. The band has a ''double trio'' line-up, as made popular by Crimson between 1994-1997. LIVE IN TOKYO finds the band performing a solid 12-song set.

Fresh, Different, Live Renditions from the K.C. songbook
I own all the King Crimson studio albums, a fair number of their live albums, and several of the ProjeKct albums. For those not in the picture, some time back (the late 1990's), Robert Fripp (K.C. founder/guitarist), in order to get some freshness for their next album, planned to split the band into "fractals", which would go out and perform and return with ideas. The intention had been that some of these fractals would not include him, but they all did. This resulted in ProjeKct One, ProjeKct Two, ProjeKct Three, ProjeKct Four, and, later ProjeKct X. Instead of using the results of those experiments to create a new album, the work of the ProjeKcts themselves was released (mostly original compositions), then when it came time to record the new King Crimson album, "The ConstruKction of Light", none of this work, from what I could see, was included, though the title track(s) was very fresh and original.More recently, a new fractal was formed, "Jakszyk, Fripp and Collins" with, again, original material. This latest ProjeKct, calling itself "Crimson ProjeKct" and the first not to include Robert, includes, as well as current members of K.C., some past members, and the songs/tunes presented live here are all from the K.C. songbook. That said, these renditions are different and fresh, highly enjoyable. If you own any live K.C. then you should own this as well. If you have not followed K.C. over recent years, then this is an interesting way for you to find out what you have been missing, and then not feel that you've bought something redundant when you decide to buy those missing albums.

Not quite perfect
I am quite pleased with this release. I note that the set list will probably not be what Crimson uses for their upcoming tour since Belew will be missing from Crimson. The album in question features many of the Belew days songs. The set list is B'Boom, Thrak, Frame By Frame, Dinosaur, Industry, Elephant Talk, Vroom Vroom, Sleepless, Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part 2, Indiscipline, Red, Thela Hun Ginjeet. Like another review notes, I miss Fripp from the lineup here. In particular, Red is a bit off, missing what I would call some major punctuation notes. Still, the song versions are quite lively, even if they are not quite Crimson. If only they played Catfood and 21st Centurty Schizoid Man, I would consider the song selection to be perfect, but what they chose really comes off excellently.

This ProjeKCt sounds as good as the original
Love this CD. The ProjeKCt plays well, rocks hard, and does a great job on the old KC classics. I saw this version of ProjeKCt in Ohio a few years ago, but they opened for another band and thus, were allotted only 60 minutes. The songs on this CD encompass more of the King Crimson catalog than 1981-84. Many old and new songs are performed. Great sound. Adrian Belew does phenomenal guitar work, and with the extra bass player and drummer, the band sounds very heavy. I love all the incantations of KC (especially 1972-74 era) with Robert Fripp. However, Belew is so good with this ProjeKCt, you won't miss Robert Fripp. This band sounds GREAT.

Amazing. Fantastic.
Great live set with energy, humor and power from this superstar mixture of King Crimson alums and superhuman additions. Nice contrast of material to the "official bootleg" release. This project is blessed by Robert Fripp - go see them any chance you get!

so-so
Some decent moments, but it's a surprisingly thin and sluggish sound for a double trio, and these songs just don't sound right without Fripp and Bruford. I would strongly recommend Adrian Belew's Power Trio Side Four Live, if you can find it, for many of the same tunes performed with much more energy.

This band is tight and frightening
Great release that showcases what this Crimson can do live. I saw them live and it was awesome. This is a great CD that King Crimson fans will love. I would love to see this faction of Crimson do a CD of original music. I suspect it would be much better than the Kenny G King Crimson that Fripp is hanging with. Just saying.

Better than average
Better than average. Could have used different improvisation than the usual since Robert Fripp wasn't perched on his stool scowling down at Adrian Belew and his antics.
