Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest Classic Foam Camping Sleeping Pad

The Therma-a-Rest RidgeRest has been a staple for backpackers and campers for decades. There are no moving parts, no inflation needed. It is very durable, very lightweight, easy to roll up and I just tie it up with a bit of twine or paracord, and usually attach it to the bottom of my backpack. I had one for years and years, and the material never wears out. I happened to lose it eventually, so I replaced it with the exact same model. It provides just enough padding and insulation to make for a more comfortable night's sleep against the little bumps of rocks and twigs and bumpy cool earth under your sleeping bag. Granted it's not rated for sub-zero Mount Everest type of snow camping, but for that type of camping, you know what you need. I've used the self-inflating type of sleeping pads, but they are cumbersome to pack, and I prefer the simplicity of this firm corrugated foam style that I can just roll up, tie up, and which is essentially indestructible, and lower cost than anything else.

I purchased this product as a sleeping mat for my dog on a deep winter backpacking trip. I only used half the mat for that. I ended up replacing the back/ sit pad of my Gossamer Gear Meraposa pack with a section of this pad that I folded in half. That turned out to one of the best last minute decisions I've ever made. It was light weight and comfortable as a backpack pad. I slipped it under my Thermarest X-Therm sleeping pad for extra R-Value and puncture insurance while sleeping at night. Most importantly, it was a fantastic sit pad that kept my body warm and comfortable sitting or kneeling on snow, ice, frozen rock, whatever. Sometimes I would sit on my X-Therm and put my feet on the RidgeRest to keep them warm or stand on it while changing cloths. I guess that torso sized section could have served as an emergency sleeping pad if my X-Therm broke in the night. It would probably be a suck night, but I'd live. My dog was happy with it as a sleeping pad too. It's surprisingly warm for as thin as it is.

I tested this pad in Odda, Norway during holiday. I knew the ground was going to be chilly so I wanted a pad that was both comfortable and kept me both warm and dry. Pros: - It's light. It hardly adds to your pack weight. - It definitely keeps the ground chill away. Between this and my sleeping back, I was warm all night. Cons: - It's really not all that comfortable, but better than the hard ground. - It doesn't roll up tight, so it can be bulky on your back pack. - It doesn't come with straps, so you have to buy the straps separately or just rely on your backpack straps. For the price, it's really worth it, especially if you're camping out somewhere a bit chilly.

I've used Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest pads for camping for almost 30 years now. First as a boy scout, and now that I'm older with my kids. I ordered a new one of these for my youngest now that he's joining us on trips. The new pad is exactly the same as the ~30 year old mat I still have. They hold up well and as long as you don't attempt to tear them should last forever. Are they comfortable though? That's the big question. If you'd asked me when I was 15 I'd have told you the pad is all I need. Approaching 40 though, I'm no longer able to get away with just the pad, there's not enough back support for me. That said, both my kids do just fine with the pad by itself. I use my old pad under a Therm-a-Rest inflatable pad for a little extra insulation and to help prevent punctures. It's perfect for that. A couple of other points about these. Over the years I've used it for more than just camping. This pad is my go to for any activity around the house (plumbing, irrigation work, etc.) that has me spending long periods laying/kneeling. The RidgeRest always makes these activities much more comfortable. Finally, keep the plastic sleeve this ships in. It's great to use to store the pad when not in use.

I’m sure other people find it great but I did not. It’s actually kind of big even when you roll it up tight which I don’t really care about the thing that bothered me. The most was I really didn’t feel any cushioning from it. I was unable to sleep on it at all. I know it’s not a mattress. Dispose would be OK at the beach or park on the grass or something if you just trying to get a suntan, but I didn’t find it for sleeping to be suitable in anyway.

This Therm-a-Rest is a solid mat. I used it once on a 3 night/4 day backpacking trip and it worked great! It was cold and windy at night and I definitely feel like it did help retain body heat. I've slept on your common, flat, yoga type mat that do okay for comfort but don't help as far as body heat goes. This one does! It's comfortable for me, but i can sleep just about anywhere.. a rock slab, slab of steel, most places so "comfort" isn't a major concern for me while backpacking and I was comfortable, warm, and slept well... and it's extremely light weight and durable. I backpacked in the Texas hill country/canyons and I'm definitely going to keep using it for now until it wears out. This is going back to the basics and I like that. A solid mat at a great price.

I purchased the RidgeRest pad to use in a camping hammock, and it did exactly what I needed it to do: stabilize the hammock, providing a flatter sleeping surface, and provide insulation, preventing the dreaded "cold butt" phenomenon well-know to hammock campers. It was comfortable to sleep on, the "regular" size fit perfectly inside the built-in sleeve in my Hammock Bliss hammock, and I did not get too hot (which is always a concern for me) even though overnight temps were in the 70s and I had a rain fly over the hammock. It's not as cushy as an inflatable pad, but that is not really an issue in a hammock. It seems very durable, and I hope to get many years of service out of it!

Do not buy this pad expecting a cushy sleep. It's not for that. It helps soften but not totally eliminate uneven, rough, and rocky terrain below your tent/sleeping bag. It also adds a little insulation. I camp at a friend's property which has a lot of rocks and shale and this eliminates any pointy or bumpy spots below me. With a sleeping bag, it's better than being on nothing. I'm able to get good sleep but so far I've also had half a load on at the end of the night so who knows. In 50 degree weather, this pad helps keep away the cold creeping up from the ground big time. The bottom of my tent had that "damp" cold feeling (not actually wet but feels wet) in the morning but the pad was totally "dry" in comparison and warm. It's really light so this would be the best for backpackers. I'm camping out of my truck so honestly I might just switch to an inflatable pad. If you're used to the comforts of home, you're better off getting a big enough tent and an inflatable air mattress, because the foam and inflatable pads are meant to mitigate discomfort, not replicate what you'd get at home in your warm bedroom.

Had one in the army. Also had the new issues air mattress as well. Depending on what bag you have, one mattress might be better than the other. Meaning my rush72 bag is better suited for the air mattress being rigged on to it under the bottom of the bag than the rolled mattress this review is based on. depending on what you’re doing, bugout bag, casual camping, stealth camping, emergencies, this mattress might not be for you but the mattress itself is of good quality and build so the mattress alone is really good and worth buying. You pick what you need a mattress to do.
