Great film. So much more than just cars.
I enjoyed this film so much. I thought it was just going to be about cars, it was so much more. I don't know how historically correct it is but it's a great story. Fantastic acting from all the cast. Beautifully filmed. Watched twice, only received it yesterday!!!!. So glad I bought it. Would highly recommend.

Wacky races style racing lets it down
Firstly i'm a petrolhead and love historic race cars; every year I seek them out at Goodwood, Silverstone or Brands Hatch. I was looking forward to this film for the racing shots as well as the story.I have to say the acting was good, expecialy Bale. Apparently the story is very US biased and downplayes the much larger part the UK engineers played in the development of this car, but hey ho nothing new there I watched for entertainment and a lot of it hit the mark. What had me literally shouting at the TV were the racing shots. Cars look good, sound good, but the reality was sub zero. Some shots through the bends were sped up. Shots of drivers snarling as they got overtaken, slamming down the throttle to edge ahead, like they were only half throttle to start with, taking long glances across to the other driver as they raced next and neck (you don't do thsi at 180mph!)....it was so bad I presumed afterwards it was supposed to be tongue in cheek and I was the fool for expecting something half serious. It was akin to herbie does daytona; really that bad. And a shame as if you watch some of the actual racing footage from the Goodwood revival festival, these cars are beasts, slide about are and very exciting to watch, flat out in the hands of great drivers. So this was the dissapointment for me, as I said great acting by some let down by the ridiculous racing scenes. Maybe I need to watch it again with my expectations lower and laugh along with it.

LE MANS '66, Ford v Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans 24 hour race.
A cracking film based on the battle between Ford and Ferrari to build a race car to win the 1966 Le Mans 24 hour race. The Ford GT40 is the only US made car to win the Le Mans 24 hour race.It stars Matt Damon as Carol Shelby and Christian Bale as British racing driver Ken Miles.A film you will not want to miss a minute of, it's a cracker! I first watched it on FILM4, great stuff!

The Spirit of Le Mans 66!
I saw this at the cinema and watched it on disc again this week. I absolutely love this film. I'm a great fan of Ken Miles, so to think a film would feature his story like this is so unimaginable it has easily won me over, despite the flaws and historical inaccuracies. The political machinations of the true story run so far and so deep that it would be impossible to represent them all in one movie, that's what all the books are for. What this movie does is to take you right into the feel and spirit of the times, and let's you enjoy the characters, the cars, and the Ford - Ferrari rivalry in an honest and realistic way. Christian Bale is just amazing as Miles, a career defining high for me.Ok, let's spot the anachronisms and inaccuracies, while being clear they in no real way spoiled my enjoyment of the film, so good was everything else:When the Ford team visit Maranello in 63, there is a 275 GTB outside, and several P3 / P4s on the factory floor. None of these cars existed at that time. When Miles wins Daytona 66, he led from around the second hour and won comfortably, there was no last lap duel with Walt Hangsen as shown in the movie. Also, the GT40 had already won Daytona in 65 with Miles again driving, a milestone that is strangely not even referred to.The dead heat finish in the film could have had the actual finish represented whereby McLaren shot ahead just at the line to take the win, making some of the fault for the theft of Miles' victory his responsibility. However, Beebe later said McLaren and Amon deserved to win as they has stuck to the team plan and driven a steady race, an utterly bizarre viewpoint, and maybe he had told Bruce to do this.....Miles broke the Ferrari challenge with his pressing drive, pure and simple. There are many (eg: Shelby Daytona Coupe fully prepared one year before it even existed), and while it's fun to spot them, they do not detract at all from the movie. This is the story of an amazing time and an amazing rivalry, with the key characters fully fleshed out. Bravo!!!!

Phenomenal
I’m wary of racing movies in case they turn out like Driven. But luckily, Le Mans 66 is an absolute gem and up there with the best.Christian Bale’s performance is astonishing, the cars and circuits look great and the sound effects are superb. Two tiny things bug me though. First is that a lot of the racing is captured from the camera following close to the cars. So while they’re moving fast you’re basically seeing them inch up on each other. It would have been nice to see more static shots of the cars passing at full chat. The second thing is something that’s in a lot of racing movies and movies with racing scenes. And that’s the characters describing what’s happening in the race to the people around them, for the benefit of the viewer. It sounds really forced. These are things that irk me about the genre and nothing hugely detrimental to this movie.A really great movie.
