Don't fall for the big name brands, the Evocharge is the best EVSE on the market! Just buy it!
Selecting an EVSE (charger) for an electric car was much more difficult than I thought it would be. Plug-in cars appeal to a certain segment of the population, which is extremely proud of their vehicle purchase. Buying an EVSE is a decision which is based on technical needs and specifications, but also has a strong personal taste component. Since electric cars are not yet truly mainstream, there isn't as much of a product and company name recognition background for people to use as a guide. To be honest, I will say that my first EVSE purchase was not this product. I was obsessed with brand name recognition, so I bought the Siemens EVSE. I owned it for a week, then put it back in the box and returned it. The Siemens EVSE was a letdown in several ways: The Siemens arrived with a different plug nozzle than that which was pictured in the Siemens online literature. There was no stress relief built into the spot where the electric cord meets the nozzle, which plugs into the car. No stress relief joint means that there is undue stress placed on the internal wire connections in the handle, which could eventually break, over a period of time. In case you do not know what a stress relief join is, just look at a part of headphones. A stress relief joint is that part of the wire right next to the plug. It is a little thicker than the rest of the wire, and keeps it from bending too much. Additionally, the Siemens unit had a built in holder for the electric nozzle. The built in holder seemed to be an afterthought, as the nozzle didn't secure itself very well, and kind of flopped around in place, no matter what I did. Perhaps this was due to the overall cheap construction of the nozzle. I certainly expected better engineering quality from Siemens...There I go, with relying on name brand recognition. Finally, and most importantly, the Siemens didn't always seem to communicate with my new car. It was inconsistent, sometimes turning itself off after charging, and sometimes staying on all night. After about a week of this, I decided to return the Siemens EVSE, and look for something which was both better construction quality and which communicated consistently with my car, which is a 2015 Ford C-Max Energi. I wanted an EVSE which was 220-240 volts and 30 amps. There are a dozen or so different brands to pick from. Some I recognized, and others I didn't. I saw Bosch and GE, which tempted me with their brand names-----but then I remembered the experience with the Siemens and I decided that brand name was not automatically an indicator of quality. In fact, it was easy to see the Blink EVSE was almost identical to the BOSCH model. So, I started to also look at brands which I have never heard of. There was Clipper Creek and Juice Box among others. However, the one which caught my eye was the Evocharge. I read all the reviews, read the specifications, visited the Evocharge website and examined images of the product close-up. It looked to be very well built and got excellent reviews. So, with the bitter taste of the name brand Siemens EVSE still in my mouth, I decided to take a chance and buy the brand which I had never heard of---and that brand is Evocharge. The Evocharge was $50 less than the Siemens, came with a separate nozzle holster and had a electric car plug nozzle which looked to be truly industrial grade, all covered in thick rubber, which would protect it if I dropped it on the concrete garage floor, by accident. When it arrived, I ripped over the box with as much fear as eagerness, because I really was unsure what to expect. The product was very, very well protected in the package with lots of high quality packing foam and then was double boxed as well. I was impressed by how much care they put into packaging the product for safe delivery. The EVSE (charger) itself was equally as impressive. The case was solid, the cable was much thicker than the cable that came with the Siemens---and interestingly, the cable for the Evocharge was made in the United States. The cable was much more flexible than the cable that came with the Siemens EVSE. The Evocharge also had a very sturdy metal mount. The Siemens came with a plastic mount, which did not feel very strong to me. Overall, the Evocharge seemed clearly superior in almost every way, when compared to the Siemens. The only thing that was better about the Siemens is that it had a 20 foot cable and the Evocharge cable is two feet shorter, coming it at 18 feet. However, in the end, two feet of length difference does not matter. I can park the car almost anywhere in the garage and the Evocharge cable reaches, without issue. In fact, having a little shorter cable has the benefit of being a bit easier to wind up. The instructions for mounting the Evocharge EVSE are very clear, and it even comes with "life size" paper templates that you can put on the wall so that you know exactly where to place the screws. All mounting hardware is supplied with the Evocharge EVSE and it is all very high quality. I mounted the charge and the nozzle holster to a board, screwed to studs in my garage wall, right next to the 240 volt outlet. When mounting I had to be precise, because the cable which plugs into the 220-240 volt NEMA outlet is pretty short. My advice is to measure, measure and then measure one more time, before putting the screws into the wall. It all worked out and the unit was easy to mount and connect to the NEMA 220-240 volt outlet. The on/off switch is kind of hidden under the unit. I flipped it one and the Evocharge EVSE came to life. I plugged it into the car, and immediately the car began to communicate with the Evocharge. The power relay popped on and the car started charging. About two hours later, charging completed and the Evocharge relay switched off and the unit went into "ready to charge" mode-----just perfect. I have been using the Evocharge for over a week now, and it communicates with the car in every way possible, without a single problem. I was not a fan of wrapping the cable around the holster, so I bought a cheap hose reel and use that to wrap the cable around, when not it use. Overall, I rate this Evocharge unit as EXCELLENT. All the mounting brackets are heavy steel. It was easy to mount to the wall, thanks to great engineering and excellent instructions. I love the Evocharge, and I give it my strongest endorsement. It certainly is built very, very solid, and uses a higher quality cable and higher quality charging nozzle than the Siemens unit. If I could pick one word to describe the Evocharge unit, it would be "solid". This thing is SOLID and RELIABLE and QUIET. My experience goes to show that sometimes the smaller company has a clearly superior product. I can't say enough nice things about the Evocharge, from the quality of the construction of the main unit, to the quality and high flexibility of the made in USA electric cable, to the industrial engineering strength of the highly durable electric plug-in nozzle, to the excellent installation instructions. It beats the more well known brands, without a doubt. Three cheers for Evocharge. Also, it just looks fantastic, minimalist, sleek, and modern. Before buying this, I had no idea who Evocharge was...Now that I own the product, I kick myself for not buying it the first time around. I urge you to give the Evocharge a chance, and you will be very pleased. It is quite simply, the BEST EVSE for sale on Amazon, in my opinion. I have included a picture of the setup in my garage. I bought the sign at the top, online, from a place called Compliance Signs. It is very thick metal, reflective and very high quality. After all, if you are going to proudly own an electric car, you should put the EVSE charger on full display for people to see. If you have read this review, I wish you all the best with choosing a great EVSE charger.

A whole lot of perfect
Packaging: Amazingly well packaged. Had Amazon decided to not over pack the box this thing would have survived a bear. Even with that nothing is difficult to remove from its packaging.Device: Perfectly simple to install and operate. If you already have the 6-50 plug then this puppy is plug and play. Please be aware the plug to device cord is only a foot long per standards and the EV cord is 18 feet. Therefore plan accordingly. Device construction is A+. Even the EV cord is better than what's found on units like ChargePoint. Operation is like that of a Nissan Leaf's evse 120 adapter. Plug it in, switch it on, wait for the ready light, then plug in your vehicle. The benefit is you won't need to unplug it once done. Just disconnect your vehicle and switch the unit off. Easy peasy. Add in the included cord storage and the fact that it's a 30 amp unit and you have a perfect device.

Another happy user
We ran a 6' electric range cord (from the unused 40 amp NEMA 14-50 receptacle/circuit behind our gas range) through the wall and into the garage, where my husband connected it to a NEMA 6-50 receptacle. Basically we turned that electric range cord into a long adapter. Then we plugged the EVoCharge into that receptacle and it fired right up. Works great, the unit only emits a low hum, and I couldn't be happier. FYI, my husband's original idea had been to hardwire the EvoCharge to the electric range cord, but while the EVo's plug can be easily removed, those wires going into the L1 and L2 terminal blocks were shaped with a special crimping tool (for a square cross section) and he could NOT get the range cord wires shaped correctly to fit into the terminal blocks. So he reinstalled the original plug and mated it to the proper receptacle instead. I guess we should have done that from the start - it was much easier.

Faults can leave you stranded
It works great most of the time. But maybe once or twice a month I'll come out to the garage in the morning to the charger blinking red, meaning a fault was encountered and charging was hauled, so I don't have a full charge. For a product this expensive, and something as important as charging your commuter car, and something that takes so long to operate that babysitting the process is impossible, this fault condition that can leave you stranded should never happen.

Excellent price/performance EV charging unit.
We just recently bought a BMW I3 and wanted an alternative to the dealer's $1,100 unit. The Evocharge fit the bill perfectly. It arrived in two days and was relatively easy to install. The unit will charge a fully depleted I3 battery in just under 4 hrs vs the small 110v charger that came with car which took over 20 hrs. Only thing I wish it had was a slightly longer cord. To make it work with the location I installed the charging unit, we have to back in the electric car into the garage. Not a big deal. Hard to beat the price/performance. It also looks nice in the garage.

much faster than default 120v factory charger
Have been using for more than a month now to charge my Ford Fusion Energi. Charges very quickly, in a couple of hours. The default 120v factory charger took significantly longer. Install required an electrician to put in outlet and I had to attach supplied mounting bracket to beams in garage in order to mount the unit to the wall. Unit has a nice modern look.

RELIABLE WORKS - 6 yrs only.
Great Charger for $579. Bought charger in 2015 for my 2015 Nissan Leaf SV. It was installed by electrician in my garage. It is a shame is no longer available in Amazon for the same price.Update: June 2021 after 6 years the Evo charger stopped working. Customer support does not answer after 3 calls & emails. Do not expect any support if the charger fails. Bought another brand due to lack of customer support. I wish they would answer phones.

Works great but outlet cord is short
I had an electrician put in a 50A breaker in my panel and a 6-50 outlet right beneath it. My single complaint is that the cord from the station to the outlet is REALLY short. That part was a pain in the butt. Make sure you allow some space between the outlet and the breaker panel so you have room to mount it.
