Karlof At His Best
The Karlof collection is fantastic! Most of these films are never shown any more, but are some of Karlof's best. My favorite is The Black Room - saw this when I was a kid and have searched for it all my life. I could only remember how scary it was and that the beautiful leading lady's name was Thea. I was so thrilled to find this was the first film of the DVD pack - it is still scary, even through adult eyes now. The film quality is very good for such old films, and sound is excellent. If you are a fan of classic horror and mystery - and/or Karlof - you must have this wonderful set of films in your collection. Turn out the lights, get out the popcorn, and enjoy the master at his best.

An Endearing Collection
of a very endearing actor's work. What an excellent medley of his artistry. Each of the six films are similar in content, yet miles apart in each of Mr. Karloff's skillfully nuanced performances. If you cherish the man and actor as I do, this dvd would serve as yet another jewel in your Vintage Films library. "The Boogey Man Will Get You" was a mind-blowing, never-before-seen treasure of Mr. Karloff's acting abilities, and it served as a perfect and precious finale for this very reasonably-priced boxed set.

A nice collection of Boris' work
I have thoroughly enjoyed many of Boris Karloffs movies so when i happened to stumble across this collection I was pleasantly surprised. I took a chance and purchased it without knowing anything about these 6 movies. So far The Black doorbis my favorite of this collection but I have been enjoying each story for different reasons. I have yet to find one film I am disappinted in and I am on movie 4. 2 more to go and I'm loving this collection.

Good value for Karloff fans
Six movies for seven dollars ,whats to complain about? In the 1940s they could not even save and stockpile blood. These films were an obvious update of the Frankenstein story. A dedicated scientist goes mad trying to conquer death. Things that are commonplace, today, like artificial hearts and medical comas were scary and unbelievable stuff back then.Unfortunately some of the films are repetitious and almost seem like they came from the same script.

Good set. If you like old black and white ...
Good set. If you like old black and white horror movies this set contains the some of the better Boris Karloff films that are not in other sets such as the Frankenstein set, the Mummy set etc. You have to get the Bela Lugosi set to get the best Karloff films not in this set. They are sold in the Bela Lugosi set because Karloff and Lugosi are both in them. That set has "The Black Room" and "The Black Cat" on them which are marvelously made films.

Nice reproduction of black and white classics
I got this primarily to watch "The Devil Commands" a creepy thriller about a scientist mapping brainwaves (very ahead of his time) who experiments with contacting the spirit world. As well-done as I recalled it when I saw it on TV as a kid.

Great collection of Mr
Great collection of Mr. Karloff's work at Columbia. I am not sure this is all the movies he made there but the majority are very well made. My favorite is the Black Room. The Boogie man will get you is so so. For the price you can't go wrong the only thing there isn't any subtitles. I think you will like this collection of his films!

Six US chillers from Karloff's peak years - great prints
Mill Creek are not known for their pristine prints, but they have done themselves proud here with beautifully crisp black and white transfers and decent sound. Aspect ratio 1.33:1, full screen. No extras or subtitles. Very briefly, the films are:THE BLACK ROOM, 1935 - the only period drama, set in 1800s Czechoslovakia, with Karloff displaying his versatile acting ability by playing twin aristocrats, one good, one bad. Very atmospheric, with castles dungeons, curses torture chambers and one very pretty maiden in distress.THE MAN THEY COULD NOT HANG, 1939 - my favourite, with Karloff as a doctor working on experiments to bring the dead back to life, and setting out to bump off the jury one by one after his unjust conviction for murder. But first he has to be reanimated after being hanged. The print on this one is stunning, and I found myself mesmerised by the juddering glass flasks, mechanical dials and rubber tubes used in his experiments. Mad scientist theme, with a touch of Agatha Christie's 'And Then There Were None.'THE MAN WITH NINE LIVES, and BEFORE I HANG, both 1940, are variations on the same theme as the above, ie, a good man going to the murderous bad through dedication to his well-intentioned experiments. THE DEVIL COMMANDS, 1941 is something of a shocker (for those days), with a touch of FRANKENSTEIN, but THE BOOGIE MAN WILL GET YOU, 1942, is a slightly disappointing comedy, with bodies building up in the style of ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. Karloff and Peter Lorre are great, but the comedy was a bit too laboured and dated for me. Interesting to see a very young Larry Parks in a key role.

Boris Karloff at Columbia Pictures, Six Great Flix You May Have Never Seen!
Boris Karloff made some of the greatest horror movies of all time during the early 1930's at Universal Studios. Timeless classics like Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Mummy. He was often paired with Bela Lugosi, the studios other great horror actor, in films like The Raven and The Black Cat.Karloff however, also starred in some entertaining films for several other studios like Warner Brothers, Gaumont British, Monogram, RKO, and Columbia Pictures. This excellent set features six films he made for Columbia during the 30's and 40's. They are typically very short, running about 70 minutes each, but immensely entertaining and fun to watch. The best of the bunch is the Black Room from 1935, he has a dual role as twin brothers, one good, one evil. This easily matches his best work at Universal and Boris delivers not one, but two great performances! Most of the other films have similar themes...Karloff typically portrays a mild mannered doctor/scientist who has been wronged in some way. Karloff eventually transforms into a "mad scientist" seeking revenge on those who have scoffed at him, or perhaps he's trying to revive the dead or connect with the supernatural. The final film, The Boogie Man Will Get You, is a comedy. Once again Karoff is an eccentric scientist with Peter Lorre as his side-kick giving him a helping hand with his experiments. Boogie Man reminded me a lot of Arsenic and Old Lace, which Lorre also starred in with Cary Grant. The six movies are presented on two single sided discs, the image quality is great and there are no noticeable compression issues. The entire running time is 6 hours 43 minutes. This is an exceptional DVD presenting some of Boris Karloff's best work. Highly Recommended!
